Absolutely--Virginia is a big one. HUGE Muslim community there, esp. in FFX, Loudoun, Prince William, Alexandria...everyone is talking about Michigan and PA, but VA may be an unpleasant surprise too. That area's my roots and my heart and community are still there.

I honestly believe most folks don't realize how many ppl w/ ties to the Middle East just aren't going to vote in November. I have a friend from North Africa who lives in purple VA. Quiet guy. Very moderate. He's voting uncommitted in November. Even my mouth dropped. We have to fix this by ending it.

I vote in the District of Columbia, the most Democratic electoral unit in the country. Any threats I make about not voting over Gaza are meaningless. But they do represent the same grievances a lot of folks up in Michigan who I don't control have, and unless we can address them we're screwed.

The impulse, perhaps rightly so, will be to smother all criticism or threats against whoever is the candidate in the face of the grave evil before us. I understand this impulse, and generally support a lot of folks doing it. I'm not going to let that squash intra-Democratic negotiation on Gaza.

Some initial thoughts on the UK elections. 1. It confirms once again that when a center-right party veers to the hard right to weaken the far right, it ends up doing the opposite. After purging moderates and going full-on wingnuts and fever swamp, the Tories got decimated by Reform, not Labour. 🧵
