I missed this xkcd when it came out earlier, but it made me laugh out loud. The joke, which is aimed at a very small group of people, is that the graph is shaped like the light curve (the change in brightness over time) of a classic supernova. Brightens fast, peaks, fades slowly.

Really excited about this paper! New, larger samples have made it possible to show that there is a statistically very significant correlation between bars and AGN in the local galaxy population. And stronger bars are more likely to host AGN. @izgarland.bsky.social led this excellent work! 🧪🔭

Not too surprising, strong bar induces motion of gaz that can feed the AGN. Also, stronger bars tend to occur in late type galaxies.

I have read pretty much everything I could find on Crossroads. I really have some doubt about reconstructed dosimetry. (Ex: sailors washing bridge in short with radiation unit was wearing full protection suit aside). Still, I could not find any biodosimetry data unlike others nuclear veterans.

I am wondering if any of those veterans ever had a biodosimetry test. I have report that some sailor were vomiting whole trying to decontaminate the ship. This is a sign of a massive dose of radiation.

Here’s silent footage of some of the more than 40,000 sailors who took part in Operation Crossroads (which the Navy hoped would show it was not obsolete) preparing for the explosion, then observing the mushroom cloud at a distance. Many—especially those who boarded target ships—died prematurely.
