Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 13th lowest on record (JAXA data)
• about 180,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 620,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 1,370,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 2,050,000 km² below the 1980s mean

Sea surface temperatures are substantially warming around the entire #Arctic Ocean in July during the satellite-era. This is especially large in the Kara Sea. Note the blue shading mostly corresponds to areas of sea ice.

Last month averaged the 2nd lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of June

Last month observed substantial departures in #Antarctic sea ice, which were particularly focused around the Indian Ocean sector and near the Ross/Amundsen Seas. This is a different spatial pattern compared to last year.

Latest 'cloud-free' mosaic from MODIS satellite imagery showing that most of the snow cover across land areas of the #Arctic has melted for the season. There are also signs that sea ice is beginning to retreat along coastal regions too.

Trend in June temperatures across the #Arctic...
The largest warming has been observed in the Siberian Arctic. Temperature anomalies/trends are smaller over sea ice in summer due to melting-thermodynamic processes.

That is a feature that is more visible in long-term trend plots (e.g., over 30 years), but not always in the monthly/interannual variability of surface temperature anomalies due to the regional influence of weather.

Trends in June sea ice concentration are still mostly confined to coastal areas of the #Arctic Ocean. The largest declines are found in the Barents Sea this time of year.

The total area of #Arctic sea ice is declining in every month of the year. However, the largest losses of sea ice are observed during the late summer and early fall.

Well now I can finally share - I just started my first day as a federal scientist at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. I'll be continuing research on improving our understanding of climate prediction and projection, especially with data-driven approaches for high-impact extremes.

Some cooler sea surface temperature (SST) departures continue to linger in the Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea. However, a sharp gradient in SST anomalies is found around Scandinavia with the warmest areas to the south and in the Baltic Sea.
