My actual Linux advice for Windows refugees:
Use Debian stable with KDE desktop and use flatpak via Discover to install software. You get stability plus regular software updates this way and the KDE look and feel is kind of like a cleaned up Windows 7, very easy to jump into.
I used Ubuntu in the past but always paired with a Windows partition as well.
Now I switched fully to Fedora with GNOME. Have an AMD GPU but recently looks like also Nvidia had better support than a few years back
I’ve been going back and forth between windows and Manjaro Arch for years.
Back then tho, Wine, and especially Proton (this was back when Valve tried making those Steam Machines with their older Steam OS) wasn’t as sophisticated so I just switched back to Windows, especially so with the lack of AC-
See, I understand a lot of that paragraph. My mother would have glazed over after "Debian" - and I'd have to do tech support over the phone when she can't figure something out.
I'm not sure how realistic this solution is for anyone under 35, when the majority of college grads don't know how to navigate a gui file system anymore.
If you are specifically wanting to game, I recommend Arch on KDE, preferably with AMD graphics hardware. This is basically the SteamOS setup and works well for running games on Steam via Proton/wine.
I've been recommending kubuntu (for non-linux people's info: very similar to the above recommendation), it's kind of awesome how kde's default UI experience is like "windows but you can change the dumb stuff if you want"
Fuck, even basic bitch Ubuntu is fine anymore. The year of Desktop Linux may be 3099 but the average end user pushed most of their needs onto their phone.
