And it's in that ambiguity that your work as an analyst of texts or politics exist, and yet you can't make people confront the reality of it.

Mentioning this for no reason

But strictly speaking they never said it, it was just a series of historical vignettes of enemies who need to be killed, followed by a "and these bad people today are in our way." So a dense person or savvy partisan can say "where did they say they'd massacre people?" But everyone understands it!

One thing you realize writing political intelligence is that many people don't have an ear or feel for rhetorical logic, so you can write in a report "strong man X indicated he would massacre his political foes."

How does Roberts square his decision now with his repudiation of Korematsu, "The forcible relocation of U.S. citizens to concentration camps, solely and explicitly on the basis of race, is objectively unlawful and outside the scope of Presidential authority"? How is it so when you can't review acts?

It was infuriating to know that CIA officers went along with treaty banned torture of detainees during the war on terror and the lesson now seems to be "oh don't worry this isn't even illegal, probably even kind of cool."

It used to be quaint to tell people that the President couldn't use the IC for domestic wiretapping or infiltration operations, as was done in the 1960s-1970s, but now it appears as J. Edgar Hoover is back, baby! Make using Signal a habit.
