The really bad news is that the US has *fewer* antivaxxers per capita than a lot of Western Europe and all of the former USSR.

WTF is wrong with France, Switzerland, Japan and South Korea?? Educated, highly industrialized countries with strong health care systems that just decided to embrace harmful idiocy?

Hey I have a question: what the fuck happened in Japan and South Korea? Did they have some sort of major traumatic vaccine problem 50 years ago or something?

It's important to point out that this is from 2018. France looks worrying on this chart, but has more COVID-19 vaccianted than the US & UK which score a lot higher on that chart. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

sanity check, ARE vaccines safe to accept in all of those countries? I wouldn't be surprised if scams, corruption, difficult transport conditions, etc. sometimes made them not be

Some correlation between historically low rates of infection and vaccine hesitancy. People who have never seen the disease place an undue risk assessment on the vaccine.

Oregon has a large Russian population and that community also accounts for a large share of our antivax population.

Interesting how the low end in Asia scales pretty much by how much post-WW2 intrusion into the cultures there was by the US.

With the data being from 2019, I’m pleasantly surprised with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Vaccine workers have been targets there ever since the CIA used a vaccination clinic to find bin Laden in 2011, with the most recent attacks being in January or so.

I don't think this has much external validity - for example, France is supposedly the worst in Europe, but then in mid-2021, as corona vaccines became available to all, French vaccination rates were fine for Western Europe, where the worst were Greece and the three German-speaking countries.
