Someone I knew at the Bank of England was going to title a research note “You know when you’ve been contangoed” but bottled it.

I’m just saying if you want to retain credibility as a scientist. Otherwise people will say “there goes the man who inferred statistical significance from an inadequate sample”. Also tbf “the orange-in-mouth man”.

The question remains whether @PaulKagame returns the money already paid by the UK, or was that offer only valid under the government that handed it over?

OK but hold on, that's a sample of one. You really need to assemble another few hundred scientists to try to fit oranges in their mouths as well.

There are 5.6 million businesses in the UK, of whom CCHQ could find just over 100 to back the Tories. Last day of this today folks. We're approaching the end in more ways than one, so I'll close this thread here. Thanks for reading. It's been real.

If you were wondering if Rishi Sunak could do anything right, by coincidence someone just pointed me to a report he did in 2017 on the security of undersea cables. Credit where it's due. Probably doesn't outweigh the debit column though.

Labour will starve puppies and kittens and tax adults who are still children and great-grandparents before they become great-grandparents. One day (mercifully or disappointingly depending on your tolerance for rank insanity) of this to go folks.

Maybe the propellers don't actually work but they're still in the water, so when the boats are propelled forward by the magnet they leave wakes behind them. Once you start looking at this graphic the number of inanities really hits you.

OK folks. Two days till UK election day. Hit me with your best #BanterHeuristic predictions.

I'll start: Tories come second, just ten seats ahead of the LibDems. Eleven Tory MPs immediately defect to Reform, making Ed Davey Leader of the Opposition. #banter

Also if those boats are sufficiently ferrous to be attracted by a big magnet I wouldn't have thought they'd be buoyant enough to make the Channel crossing. Someone should tell the people-smugglers about vessels made from light, durable fibreglass or inflatable dinghies.

My Trade Secrets today. There's quite a lot of bipartisan consensus over trade in the US (wrongheaded) and the UK (OKish for non-EU trade).

But Marine Le Pen in France is a new and v dangerous departure, bringing protectionism to the French border.

I don't think either had even lived in the US except Miliband studying at Harvard or MIT or wherever it was. Clegg was hired because of his Brussels connections AIUI.

IDK tbh - I always thought Nick Clegg was regarded as all a bit suspiciously EU (time working in Brussels, Spanish spouse) but maybe that was just me being particularly aware of it. (Miriam was a trade lawyer contact.)

Yep without disagreeing with anyone (unusually for me), it is noticeable that the standard line is "ha ha he's going run off to California" rather than "ha ha he's going to run off to India", despite his wife's connections in the latter.

My Trade Secrets today. It's not just political caution about Brexit restraining a Labour government from aligning with the EU economy. If the US presses the UK to join its anti-China camp on tech and trade, Britain will be pulled in two directions.

If it's purely a balance sheet fiddle, not too bad. (Corrosive of public trust and all, but not too bad.) But this seems more like actually letting private investors say what gets built.
