It's here! The story to which my writing group responded, "First of all how dare you," and, "I liked the gross stuff."

We don't know for sure why he died. Best we can tell, he was born with a heart defect that struck suddenly. Whatever it was, it was immediate, and he didn't suffer. His life was short but bright, and full of love.

Grey Brother was the best of kittens. He loved fiercely, played hard, and was curious about everything. He curled on my lap and pulled the drawstrings out of my hoodies. He lived for six months.

This was foolish, because Grey Brother is, of course, the name of one of the wolves from The Jungle Book. We had unintentionally bestowed this kitten with a Real Name and we fell in love. This is Grey Brother. We kept him.

Similar to how we called Moomin "Mommy Cat," we'd avoided naming any of the kittens. We called them things like "Stripey Face" and "Spotty Back" instead. There were two grey kittens, one male and one female, so we named them Grey Sister and Grey Brother.

(Her name is now Moomin, because that's what she's shaped like. She is fat and happy and living her best life. This story isn't about her.)

We couldn't keep six new cats, so we found homes for four of the five kittens with friends and family. No one wanted to take the mother, whom we had dubbed "Mommy Cat" so as to avoid giving her a real name and therefore getting attached, so we ended up keeping her.

Storytime! (CW: pet death). In late 2019, we found a cat at the end of our driveway. She was clearly starving and abandoned, and ran to us and jumped in the car as soon as we stopped to see if she needed help. Long story short, we took her in and she had kittens.

I am begging you to rethink if you find yourself saying any version of "Art should confront/disturb/disrupt/be realistic or plausible/buy me a pony/fill in the blank." Every artist has their own artistic project. Why do you think YOU get to tell them what it should be?

I'm in this! And I'm SO excited for this issue!! My story, "The Robot and the Witch," has gone through eight or nine iterations, none of them quite right, until I rewrote it specifically with the intent of submitting to Heartlines, and everything fell into place. Can't wait for you all to read it. 💜

Oddly enough I look for pre-remade artifacts! I'm doing a coffee-table book on the old graffiti (you know, when they used paint instead of lichen, moss, or bioluminescent bacteria). This summer I'm hunting for decommissioned train cars -- you get some GREAT photos from those. :)

wait does your Creature help with laundry? I had to ban mine from the laundry room after it broke the washer by riding the spin cycle one too many times (it also kept eating my socks, but now I buy it dollar store pairs to snack on with me for popcorn movie nights, so that's fine)

Most people are terrified of the Creature that Lurks in Shadow, but not you. You've always felt a kinship. You, too, often wish to merely observe from the sidelines, apart yet still a part. How was it you first managed to befriend the Creature?

it's really telling whose stories get held up as "universal" and "relatable" and speaking to "a commonality of experience" and who doesn't yikes It is actually specificity that attracts readers and audiences, not this vague nebulous non-existent concept of universality ugh

Why do movies need "mass appeal" before they're greenlit. Why can't we make something weird. Why don't us freaks get to make something that comes from our deranged little hearts 😞

If you want a story to have universal appeal you HAVE to go deeply specific and personal. The more you aim for some fake, imagined, "universal experience" the more you get bland, tasteless mush that absolutely nobody wants.

A) the most important takeaway: this stance from Disney/Pixar is racist, sexist, and homophobic. B) less important but still incredibly frustrating: it's just a really lousy take on storytelling with no understanding of what actually makes stories appealing.

You can probably read my story in under a minute! 😂 It was originally conceived of as three interconnected drabbles, so each section was written to have exactly 100 words. Combined, it's now just over 300. It's small, but it packs a punch!
