I think the times made a difference. Like once upon a time, when one company bought another it was because they wanted that company to be a key part of the business and helped make it more successful. Now companies, especially tech like AT&T, buy other companies just for the sake of “growth.”

It’s really in no one in power’s interests to have a functional or effective news media. So decoupling it from the existing capitalist media ecosystem is necessary; making it not-for-profit; making it an enterprise unaccountable to shareholders…and I dunno how you do that today w/out a benefactor.

It must be incredibly discouraging, the economics of recorded music. I read an interview with Stevie Nicks where she said it wasn’t worth the agony of recording another original album, and that’s still probably selling millions of copies - only many millions fewer than she used to.
