I had a conference friend (whom I miss; she passed away a while back) named Nóirín who kept a gallery of conference badges that had encoded her name into WTF-8

That is a great essay! and I can commiserate. Not only does my 1st name have a diacritical mark, but my legal “last name” is actually 3 names with spaces instead of hyphens. I have a “middle” name, too, so I have 5 names, no hyphens.

We recently had a software provider attempt to use THE USERS CORPORATE EMAIL ADDRESSES as a primary unique identifier. I raised the spectre of name changes and they seemed puzzled by the concept that people might wish to change their names....
