two things are true for me a disabled person in legislated sub-poverty living in canada: 1. i'd be dead if not for public healthcare 2. yet i've still had to crowd-fund thousands upon thousands of dollars multiple times for basic needs & out-of-pocket medical costs like oxygen, mobility aids etc

i live in canada & while what's left of our public healthcare system is better than the US, that's a very low standard. public services are defunded & bought off by private equity, our disability "support" rates are just as abject poverty level as the US & out of pocket medical expenses are absurd.

so my partner just told me that when i was in the hospital in march, i woke up from surgery & mistook the bag that was attached to a tube in my back to drain excess fluid & blood for pomegranate juice?? apparently i kept trying to open it to have a sip so they eventually had to just hide it from me

You can't both shove Disabled people out of offline spaces and then say "online discussion of how not to be a harmful person isn't praxis". I mean, you can but you're being an asshole. And for many Disabled people, those offline spaces were never accessible. It's not just masking.

also not to keep ranting but it's not just costs that gatekeep poor disabled ppl from the vital mobility aids/assistive devices we need. it's the arduous, time-consuming application process. repairs which are also not covered often take many months -even YRS. but those barriers don't exist for MAiD.
