Starting today, I'm taking a scheduled (but extremely well-timed) social-media break over the summer for several reasons. But don't worry—the book recommendations, anodyne political quips, glorious #BQT threads, and photos of pretty flowers will resume in September. Until then, cheers in solidarity!

Organize. If you need help figuring out how to approach that work, how to keep at it, or why collective action is our best hope in catastrophic times, remember that we wrote a book for you. ❤️

So many of these people spent YEARS telling people that things that political organizers said would happen would not happen due to 'precedent', norms, collegiality, etc and they were fucking wrong 100%.

Congratulations to both of you! (You really did find the perfect day to rub it in the noses of those of us still stuck here, too, which in my book is always a nice bonus.)

And let’s not forget that they’ve got lifelong sinecures to boot! Most craven lickspittles at least do it because they need the gig, they need the juice. These clowns could have literally sat around for decades swapping golf stories at brunch. Actively evil.

Beyond his obvious problems, Biden is the worst possible person to be President in this historical moment. He doesn't speak about Supreme Court corruption because he's a supposed "institutionalist," he convened a "commission" which came to nothing, he has absolutely no fire to rally the country, etc

The only solution they ever offered was to paint themselves as the lesser evil, and encourage us to vote harder. But actually battling that evil has never been and will never be their priority, until the time comes when there are no more opportunities for them to wage that battle at all.

There’s just one small problem with everyone’s earnest suggestions for how Biden and the Democratic leadership can address this latest crisis: it’s precisely the Democratic Party’s perennial unwillingness ever to address any of these kinds of crises that got us here in the first place.

I’m just an ignorant bumpkin, of course, but it seems to me like the two favorite liberal-Democratic polar moods (thirsty savior worship, or reflexive lesser-evilism) may not in fact be a sufficient foundation for political identity and political struggle

This year, it's hard. Rick died in December. We had a memorial service for him at the Stonewall in April. His essay was given to all the mourners as a pamphlet seen in this picture atop the little altar of books I built for Rick today.

n 2009, I asked my friend Richard Bowes to write about his experience of the Stonewall riots. He wrote this essay, "In History's Vicinity", for my blog: mumpsimus.blogspot.com/2009/06/rick...

It’s a little thing, I know, but do any of you still remember when John Roberts flubbed the oath ceremony during Obama’s inauguration, and Obama had to correct him, and then they decided they should do it over again in private because Roberts screwed it up? I think about that sometimes.

For years, people have been walking around with heads full of timely information about the latest Super Bowls, awards programs, Met Galas, and debates, and I have nothing I can offer them. Instead I’ve been staring at a book, or a bird, or a tree.

My general rule of thumb: if there’s some broadcast event that people feel compelled to livetweet, both the event and the livetweeting of it are best avoided.

this is an extremely valid reason to never host your conference in a state that can opt out of life-saving medical procedures for people who are pregnant. All professional societies should take note. 👇

A few months ago I finished a manuscript. High on completion euphoria, I rated it a solid 8/10. I started thinking about sending it out. A dear friend read it and loved it. I let it cool off. When I returned to it, I saw that it was closer to a 7/10. I’m not sending it out. My friend is furious.
