I ended my subscription the day that story broke, but I didn't really get the NYT until much later when it clicked that their wealthy owner class is a lot more conservative than their average reader and their Trump diner stories and such are showing their ownership's lean

when there wasn't really new news. The current behavior of the NYT is not new, it's just more obvious. Conservative-owned paper with a mostly-liberal readership that it tries to steer more conservative. They want Trump and not just for clicks.

A lot of the current deluge of pernicious bullshit seems tailor made to sow even more division among the liberal to left spectrum. If you find yourself fighting with, scolding, and alienating people with whom you agree on 80% of stuff, consider who benefits from that.

This is something Trump could do without Congress being involved. Why isn't this a major talking point? Why isn't every reporter asking Trump his plan on this?

I downloaded the Project 2525 policy doc from their own website. This stuff is not secret! And I'm it, they explicitly argue the FDA's approval of abortion drugs should be reversed, creating a huge roadblock to women's healthcare even in blue states.

The guy who shot up the Highland Park 4th of July parade was a major Trump guy and showed up at a lot of counter protests on the conservative side and this wasn't mentioned in any of the stories about it.

Luckily for me I find people making those kinds of absolute statements very easy to dismiss. Also one of many reasons I enjoy your podcast so much as it avoids treating such subjective things as concrete while still being able to comment on quality. Excellent needle threading.

Seems like so subjective a question over such a huge amount of material that there cannot be a definitive answer. If there were only a few albums each this might be possible.

True. But demand didn't slack off, so much as the glut and race got he bottom pricing killed the retail market. My friends and I kept playing games right through the gap before Nintendo came out

Indeed. I was sure they would (and for gaming, for me, they did). I went to CES a couple times in 83 and everyone was hawking a keyboard addon for their console or computer/game console hybrid.

The most amazing thing to me at the time was that the popular view was that videogames were a fad that was over. Though just a teen, I could see the issue wasn't a big slump in demand but a huge glut in the market. Everyone rushed out games then slashed prices when they underperformed.

This actually worries me more than January 6th did, back when it happened. My analogy at the time was that they were casing a house and checking to see what doors were unlocked, and that it was a trial run for the fire as well. I expect a lot of shenanigans this year.

I'm in my 50s and I'm captivated right now! I've never seen this cover before, which surprises me. It's riveting. Lots going on; the malevolent ghost as noted; man fighting his own split-identity nature; giant matchbook! A shame the stories were not usually as good as the hook.

I knew that was going to be too short to be clear. All republicans are complicit, but I don't think all of them hold those extreme views and will go along with whatever the mass of the party is doing. This is not excusing them, but it gives me some hope for the post Trump future.

Exactly. I'd say it's less than half, but they've taken control of the GOP and that gives them far too much influence. Their extremism makes them have bad vibes about everyone else, and most of everyone else has bad vibes about THEM.

The New York Times started making sense to me when I thought about it as a paper run by conservatives who know their audience is mostly liberal, and they wish it were not so. Hence the horse race, hence Pennsylvania diner stories, hence their Op Ed pages. They know who Trump is. The cover for him.

I think an underrated cause of general malaise is the fact that most of the country thinks that half the country has horrible political views. People think things are bad because there are people with such diametrically opposed viewpoints that are highly visible. Not an argument for centrism, btw.

Comics: I had the second half of an All Star Comics story, didn't read the first half for a decade or so. Heard about the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams Green Lantern/Green Arrow comics, but only had read a couple of random issues for years. Gwen Stacey death story? Heard of but unread for years.

Yeah VR is sort of an outlier on the list. Not as hyped, and actually more applicable where it is most hyped (entertainment). I still don't think 3D printing has been hyped 1/10th the amount AI and Blockchain have been.

AI and Blockchain are far more flexible and abstract technologies, and therefore more prone to being picked up by executives. I think there's a difference between selling the hype (Adidas) and believing it (what's happening with AI). Adidas knows 3D printing is worse, but AI has true believers.

I'm not saying it's not out there, just that it's an order or two less than AI and Blockchain. I suppose it's on par with VR. I think a better comparison is with the hype surrounding the launch of the Segway. 20+ years ago that was supposed to change society.

3D printing seems to be gaining steam actually. Printers are getting cheaper and more plug-and-play all the time. But also 3D printing was never an invasive apply-this-to-everything buzzword like those others. Boardrooms never had talks about how to apply 3D printing to their random business.
