relatedly, i am going to lose my mind at how 90 percent of trump coverage treats him as if he wasn't president for four years

I think this is the result of 50 years of the mainstream press trying to accommodate accusations of liberal bias. Media have habitually quoted Republicans exactly for years, no context, but they have edited Trump for clarity.

We get the worst of both with that one. Simultaneously treating him as if he was never President, while downplaying what his second term would be like because he couldn’t accomplish his authoritarian agenda in the first

I think he gets favorable coverage by design. They want to elect him again, they being the handful of rich assholes who own news corporations. Nobody is this incompetent where the effects of that incompetence are so consistently favorable to a single party and candidate.

Trump is not a mystery. He was well-known as a scumbag before running in 2016, and we definitely know that he was a terrible POTUS. He's declined so much since then, descending into paranoia and madness, as well as showing clear signs of dementia. We know who and what he is. No one should deny it.

The man had a trifecta for 2 years and the only major legislation he got through was a large tax cut for the wealthy. His desires and motivations are hardly inscrutable.

Feel like this is related by the bizarre need within the discourse to pretend there is daylight between Trump and the "mainstream" Republican Party

The mainstream media is a slave to its narratives, and it doesn’t have a narrative that covers a former president coming back and seeking re-election after being out of office, something that hasn’t happened in living memory. So it defaults to the “challenger-from-nowhere” narrative it understands.

He talks a lot of talk, but there are hard numbers on his performance on office. ~At least~ 1,192,931 Americans killed by Covid 1400 immigrant families permanently separated 6.3% unemployment and 2.3 million jobs lost Like… he's a huge loser.
