Also hilarious because if they knew anything about the Reign of Terror they'd know how that particular strategy will eventually work out for them

Also I can only assume that anybody who thinks "y'all" is exclusively a Southern thing doesn't have any Black folks in their social circles

Anyway, luckily for Hosono (and thankfully for us), it turned out that the two session musicians he hired were every bit the genius he was, and they quickly realized that YMO should be more than a one-off project. And so it began.

I think when most listeners hear the YMO version (which would go on to become their first hit, hitting #17 on the UK singles chart and #18 on the US R&B chart) they'll immediately hear an '80s video game aesthetic, but of course this was recorded in 1978. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkkF...

I only discovered that Firecracker was a cover literally last week. Hosono wanted to record an electronic cover of Firecracker to subvert the original's westernized Orientalism. You can hear the original here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKaB...

Okay let's briefly escape our decaying democracy to discuss the self-titled debut from Yellow Magic Orchestra! YMO formed in 1978 when producer/bassist Haruomi Hosono hired session musicians Yukihiro Takahashi (drums) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (keyboards) to record a cover of Martin Denny's Firecracker.

So anyway, just like I did with the Kinks, I'm starting with YMO's first album (appropriately titled Yellow Magic Orchestra) and I'm going to listen to it at least once a day all week, before moving on to the next album next week. And I'll share my thoughts here.

Anyway, in the year since discovering them, I feel like they pop up EVERYWHERE. Literally this morning on WGN Morning News they used one of their songs as background music while doing a story about tofu.

Now I'm intrigued, so I decide to listen to their debut album while doing a 20-mile trail run outside of Rockford. There are definite parallels to Kraftwerk and other early Krautrock bands like Neu, but it also has a distinctly Japanese feel that distinguishes it from its German electronic cousins.

I studied in Germany in college and am always on the look out for interesting German music so I click on it ("Neue[r] Tanz" meaning "new dance" in German). But then I notice the first song's title is in Japanese and I think "wait is this like the Japanese Kraftwerk?" and turns out they sort of are.

Alright, friends... new month, new band. Starting this week, I'm going to be doing a deep dive of Yellow Magic Orchestra's catalog, one album at a time. I should probably start with how I even discovered YMO (which was only about a year ago). I was on spotify and noticed this recommendation:

Will this be as popular as my Kinks deep dive? No. Was my Kinks deep dive ever popular? Also no.

I am excited to announce that, now that I'm done with my Kinks deep dive, I'm shifting gears a bit and will start going through the Yellow Magic Orchestra discography one week at a time. If you're not familiar with YMO, imagine if Kraftwerk wrote video game music, but it's much cooler than that.

I try to keep my name and social media separate because I don't want work up in my business with a simple Google search, but "you can't be a leftist and have that job" discourse kinda makes me want it hard to do it the other way too. That discourse is pretty exciting with my resume.

On top of that: Iām so grateful to have a twitter-style place that hasnāt reached twitterās level of cesspool. Glad weāre all here together, pals!

FYI, if youāre a patron of Beautiful People, Iāve found Fansly is a way more creator and patron friendly website than OnlyFans. Being able to buy content and see teasers and follow people you might not necessarily sub to is a game changer. It utilizes a FYP and tags!!
