the worst dudes online are the guys who are like “the time for electoral politics is over, it’s time for guillotines.” yeah bud i’m sure you’ll stop posting and get the ball rolling on the guillotines any minute now.
"We need to revolt! We need to take to the streets!"
Ok. Ok, do it. Go do something. Spray paint a police car. Throw brick through a senator's office window.
Oh, you're not? You're not going to do anything other than scold people for talking about voting too much? Yeah, I thought so.
The problem with voting is that voting for the "lesser evil" still in some sense implicates me in evil. This is why I prefer the straightforwardly morally pure act of advocating for chopping people's heads off.
I sometimes think about guillotines. Then I remember I have a mortgage. Sometimes at DnD night when we pretend to be elves and dwarves we also fantasize about guillotines. Then we remember that we all have mortgages and most of us have kids.
99.999% of people who post stuff like this want to watch revolution from the safety of their own basements. They won't initiate it, and they won't even join in when it starts. Vibes and rewards only.
If you know they aren't going to do it, then doesn't that imply they're just venting, too?
Leadership isn't doing anything to protect us. They told us to vote harder in the face of an opponent who has told us he will steal elections and a court who has told us they'll rubber stamp it...
Even a serious attempt at a revolution would be a mess and best avoided, but what is your alternative then?
Decades of “just vote” has brought us here.
Everyone who calls for the guillotine assumes they will be a spectator. Nobody gets that real revolutions involve good and innocent people swept up in the maelstrom while scumbags become wealthy and powerful
I get where it comes from. I’m frustrated and angry too. That said, I agree that it isn’t terribly helpful and maybe they should just put the phone down and yell into a pillow for a bit.
Yeah people using the Internet for a bit of hyperbole are the worst and not the people using the Internet to spread fascism, or chill porn or recruit for the manosphere. Those are all fine and not the folks being a bit arch because they feel electoral politics hasn't delivered in 50ish years
There is indeed no history of physical force antifascism to draw lessons from. Voting or talking about guillotines online. Those are indeed the only political tactics that have ever existed and can ever exist.
People say that shit without realizing guillotines were an expression of state violence. It's like using Old Sparky as a symbol of revolution. Most of the people who got their heads chopped off were peasants ffs
I don't see it as a call for literal guillotines, so much as a callout that righteous violence exists, and I guess a criticism of liberal pacifism. I doubt any of them are practicing said violence, but that doesn't make them incorrect.
It may be when they googled 'guillotine' they got curious and two clicks later learned 10 years of French Revolution led directly to France's 1st emperor (Napoleon) and 15 years of Napoleonic wars-- and not some equality and fraternity and liberty like it said in all the brochures.
I got into it a few days ago with someone who INSISTED that voting is pointless and we need to do something else.
Well, sweetheart, yes. If everyone stops voting, it WILL be pointless.
I mean, such people DO exist, the ones who are plotting armed uprisings or whatever. But they're usually just called "terrorists" and they don't post about it online ahead of time.
And by this point I'm as much of a cliche as they are but I'll never shut up about how THAT'S NOT WHAT THE GUILLOTINE WAS ABOUT. During the Terror, the guillotine was mostly for common criminals, and priests, and people who said the wrong to the wrong person. Not for "landlords" or "capitalists.
Can you imagine people who can't change their oil trying to construct a guillotine- you can't buy them on amazon.
I mean U.S. emergency rooms handle 10,000 fireworks injuries every July 4th weekend. 42% of those injuries involve the losing hands, arms or fingers
Person who has debilitating social anxiety and spent 3 weeks demanding cheap Doordash be a constitutional right are for sure going to lead a violent revolution
We’ve all seen ‘the worst dudes online’ and it is not this. Everyone who has made a ‘guillotine’ comment is very likely feeling and worrying about all the same things you are. When has scolding as an influence tool done anything but create horizontal violence
I've met plenty people in person who ask 'why hasn't someone 'done' something about this'. And I ask, 'why haven't you? who are you nominating?' Because all I've seen is people full of hate on the right willing to go over the line.
It's been intensely frustrating to see people that, nominally, are on the same side as me on needing to defend against facism now more than ever, but they believe that calling people who want to rally voters stupid and otherwise providing no path forward is somehow, against the odds, the right play.
I think engaging in a little romantic reverie is fine and healthy. The equivalency to QAnon is just ludicrous, the left version of QAnon is Russiagate.
The question of what we would do while the Nazis came to power has been answered with a collective “nothing” no one is doing anything or is going to do anything and there’s no allies to come save anyone this time
The time for The Executive Branch to galvanize the DOJ to go after the Insurrectionist MAGATs in Congress, the Criminal Justices on the Supreme Junta and any and all other criminal elements of the RNP(REPUBLICAN NAZI PARTY)....like the song says: Should have been done long ago....
The problem here is that it only works when enough of us decide to roll out the guillotine.
But I don't really see electoral politics working out for the last eight years, so I'm not really sure how people can keep saying this even as it looks more and more like Trump is going to be president.
hey what happened to all those guys who busted out the guillotines anyways. I'll just assume they lived long prosperous lives during which their heads stayed on the whole time.
this basically serves the same purpose as QAnon shit on the right. it projects itself as an aggressive form of political engagement, but it’s really just a retreat into fantasy and nihilism
