The number of adults I sell on the public library, who had *no idea* of all the things they can get there! "But I don't have time to take the kids..."
It's ok, they can check out ebooks & you don't even have to make time to return them! "Audiobooks are so expensive..." They loan those too!
I love our libraries "library of things" that can be checked out like blood pressure monitors, cake pans, frisbee golf sets, hot spots, etc... It's also a nice airconditioned space for those who don't have ac.
Suddenly people *love* the library because it's relevant to their needs (saving time, saving money.) Our lack of social responsibility is so disheartening - but the key is probably just literally showing these people how easy it is to make library use a regular part of their lives 😕
My library has e-books that I can check out from the comfort of my couch. (Including recipe books!) And it gives me access to LinkedIn Learning. And newspapers. It also has audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, streaming video, a bunch of on-site event stuff for kids and adults. Libraries are awesome!
I'm always promoting the LA County library system. It's massive. Their ebook and audiobook selections are huge and if you need a physical item, you can have it sent to your local library from one their 86 branches.
We were expanding our village library. An opponent told me he never uses it. Years later he told me how much he enjoys story time with his toddler.
He never could imagine the library’s usefulness for all of the other patrons until he did.
Tools! So many libraries lend out tools now! I've repeatedly borrowed a thermal camera, just was well could borrow a sewing machine, rotary tool, laser level, or pipe cutter. The library is absolutely awesome and has helped us diagnose major home maintenance problems solely via that tool collection.
I have so many friends who are dead broke and spend SO much money on new books (adding to a massive TBR pile), but the second you bring up the library they suddenly Could Neverwith a boring counter for every argument. It’s maddening.
I used to work at the library. I used to stay away because it felt like visiting an ex. Now I use the library every day and I haven’t been inside in five years!
