This has been a thorn in my side re: the American political landscape; countless articles bemoaning the polarization of America and the loss of civility. As a queer person, it’s hard to see a path to compromise and civility when the right wing has been openly saying I shouldn’t exist my entire life.
As my father used to say when I asked why we didn’t join the country club, “we don’t go places where they’re mean to our friends.” The country club didn’t have Black or Jewish members, so it couldn’t have us. It’s not a complicated principle.
That’s not fair. They’ll allow you to exist if you repent to White Jesus, renounce your orientation and live a lie your remaining days. Except at Bible camp.
Bigots want to kill me and so many people I care about, and I should be NICER to them, in hopes they'll suddenly realize that's mean and change their minds? Get all the way the fuck out of here with that victim-blaming shit, and tell THEM that THEY need to fucking stop wanting to kill people.
I was radicalized when I had to spend 6 weeks in hiding on unpaid leave with a loaded rifle next to my bed because ppl *badly* freaked out that a trans woman was a substitute teacher, and GOP guys running for school board promised to file lawsuits to have me fired. I was warned to stay out of sight.
These aren’t disagreements about tax policy or funding. It’s impossible to be civil to “the other side” when a core of their campaign is that, given their way, my personhood would be erased.
I believe that as the cinematic masterpiece starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Time Cop, taught us all:
You don't have to be nice to someone who's trying to erase you from the timeline.
