I think some people will eventually dig in and do the deep psychological work of confronting their own biases and so forth; for the most part, I'm willing to settle for them doing the right thing *now*.

Sure. And the way you get people to do that work with you is when they trust you. People don't take criticism from people they don't trust. And the way to get people who think of themselves as good is to show them how what you want from them is a way for them to be good.

I think being directly accused of hypocrisy is something that a lot of people don't like; that a committed effort to understand themselves and their moral universe is something that takes a lot of work and commitment, and a lot of people are at very different places in that process.

That's why I was asking for clarification. So when you say "what a privilege to be offended", you're talking about someone who was offended that I called them a hypocrite? I'm not sure if I think that it is a privilege specifically, but I think it is pretty common.

I think it's often necessary to call out that behavior, depending on a lot of things like power relations and visibility, but there's a lot of times where I actually do think it makes people dig in their heels, and so has marginal utility.

You're saying I'm offended by it, or you think the people I'm talking about it are offended? I'm not *offended* by it, I just don't think it's gonna work. And my own experience with dealing with people who are racist has been, I'm sorry to say, has been similar --

A lot of people will prefer to believe that what you are saying isn't true, or it's not as bad, or was necessary for some reason, rather than believe that they aren't good and weren't always good. I think people CAN learn that they were hypocrites, but not by being told

When a person says something like "America is already fascist" or "the policies that you supported led us here", that's not an invitation to change, it's an accusation. And faced with it, a lot of people are going to default back to their own sense of who they are -- good people.

Okay, but saying it's necessary to call people hypocrites in order to invite them to change is very different from not calling them hypocrites at all, and what I am saying is that I don't really think it works that way.

there are also plenty of people who view that incongruity as de facto evidence of hypocrisy, and they're mad about and critical of it.

I mean, I know all of this stuff, this is obviously true. But what does it meant to say it's "incongruous"? If you care about this, but not that, even though they are of a piece, that makes you a hypocrite. & while there are no doubt plenty of people writing in a way that invites people to see this

For the record I don't really believe in good people either, but I do think there are people who see themselves as good.

See this? This is anti-Semitic. It's not "anti-Zionist" it's not "pro-Palestinian" it's just straight antisemitism no matter how you try to dress it up.
