"Oh I used to think the GOP were a bunch of psychopaths who are actively trying to destroy the lives of all of my friends but did you hear how articulately Mitt Romney explained why it's good for poor people to starve? Really makes you think, man."

I don't think I've watched a presidential debate since Obama - McCain in like 2008 because who gives a shit. Who fucking cares? What if the Democratic nominee came out and took a huge shit on the floor and forgot how many states they are, what, am I gonna vote for a Republican?

It's just like why would it? Who was choosing between Joe Biden and Donald Trump based on how good they were at yelling at each other?

Here is a short analysis that focuses on what Project 2025 would mean for student borrowers and debt. It’s based on the concrete aspects of the P2025 proposal. Things get worse if you read between the lines.

You've got this guy that you've invested so much in and suddenly, inatantly the route for all that energy is closed, and it just like backs up inside your system and you don't know what to do with it or where to put it, so you get an infinity of deranged takes and blame casting and so forth

I think there's a lot -- I don't want to say I have sympathy for this reaction, because I do think it's bad, but I kind of understand it, because there's so much like, internal emotional backlash?

The pretense is always that learning about the history of racism will make (or is even MEANT to make) white kids feel guilty, which is just not how normal people react to things that happened before they were born. What they’re really afraid of is that it will make them feel outraged.

One of the frustrating things about Bernard J Sanders is that he is also old as fuck but nevertheless is a relentlessly effective communicator. I don't think he's wrong or right, and I don't know if he would've beat Trump or what. But he's very good at this.

At the very least if you're gonna say "yeah we've got to take this incredibly risky step that no one has successfully done before" you ought to be able to say you'll be there to deal with the fallout. Otherwise, who gives a shit what he thinks? Might as well ask George Clooney.

I think it actually probably *is* nothing if he's already announced his retirement. He's absolved from having to have to deal with whatever chaos might ensue if Biden does step down, and he's got nothing to offer anyone else who steps up.

Worth remembering that Trump tried to overturn the ACA without a replacement, which could have brought back lifetime caps and revoked coverage for pre-existing conditions. In other words, if he'd had his way, many more Americans could have gone bankrupt and died.

Oh, well, I have some ideas. I know it seems like I'm talking out of my ass here, but I have read and thought a lot about this, and have had to have a lot of conversations where I try to get someone around to the side of the angels. But if there's one thing I love, it's giving things more thought.

I think some people will eventually dig in and do the deep psychological work of confronting their own biases and so forth; for the most part, I'm willing to settle for them doing the right thing *now*.

Sure. And the way you get people to do that work with you is when they trust you. People don't take criticism from people they don't trust. And the way to get people who think of themselves as good is to show them how what you want from them is a way for them to be good.

I think being directly accused of hypocrisy is something that a lot of people don't like; that a committed effort to understand themselves and their moral universe is something that takes a lot of work and commitment, and a lot of people are at very different places in that process.

That's why I was asking for clarification. So when you say "what a privilege to be offended", you're talking about someone who was offended that I called them a hypocrite? I'm not sure if I think that it is a privilege specifically, but I think it is pretty common.

I think it's often necessary to call out that behavior, depending on a lot of things like power relations and visibility, but there's a lot of times where I actually do think it makes people dig in their heels, and so has marginal utility.

You're saying I'm offended by it, or you think the people I'm talking about it are offended? I'm not *offended* by it, I just don't think it's gonna work. And my own experience with dealing with people who are racist has been, I'm sorry to say, has been similar --

I think that's a realization that comes after having found the moral valence of two things that are contradictory and realizing it on their own.

A lot of people will prefer to believe that what you are saying isn't true, or it's not as bad, or was necessary for some reason, rather than believe that they aren't good and weren't always good. I think people CAN learn that they were hypocrites, but not by being told

When a person says something like "America is already fascist" or "the policies that you supported led us here", that's not an invitation to change, it's an accusation. And faced with it, a lot of people are going to default back to their own sense of who they are -- good people.

Okay, but saying it's necessary to call people hypocrites in order to invite them to change is very different from not calling them hypocrites at all, and what I am saying is that I don't really think it works that way.

there are also plenty of people who view that incongruity as de facto evidence of hypocrisy, and they're mad about and critical of it.

I mean, I know all of this stuff, this is obviously true. But what does it meant to say it's "incongruous"? If you care about this, but not that, even though they are of a piece, that makes you a hypocrite. & while there are no doubt plenty of people writing in a way that invites people to see this
