Folks, I may not be able to attend Sunday morning worship at all this summer. I’m really sad about this. Any suggestions for a good spiritual practice to do instead? I was thinking of an early morning walk up Mount Davidson and solo readings/morning prayers. ⚓️

I didn’t really know anything about Jeffrey Epstein or Anthony Bourdain before their respective newsworthy disasters. This is the only excuse I can come up with for my continued inability to tell them apart in photographs. Yes I feel guilty about this.

Miki and I never liked this show—Holden was garbage, Miller was incomprehensible, none of the other characters were sufficiently engaging—we made it through a season and a half due to so much enthusiastic recommendations, but remained bored and finally gave up. What were your favorite parts?

Evelyn Underhill travelled frequently to continental Europe to pursue her studies in art, seafaring, bookbinding, writing, and Catholicism. She became the first woman to lecture Anglican clergy, and the first woman included in Church of England commissions. She died at age 66 on this day. 5/5 ⚓️

This dim view of Anglicanism was perhaps colored by her family's total disinterest in theology & spirituality. It is hard to imagine the level of alienation a mystic like Evelyn might feel in such circumstances, but she remained devoted to her parents and her husband throughout her life. 4/? ⚓️

She was strongly drawn to the Roman Catholic church, an interest that intensified over the course of her life. Underhill never left the Church of England, but she felt stiff-necked Anglicanism was poorly suited to her strange experiences...or the new Edwardian fervor for spiritual imagination. 3/? ⚓️

Although she was a committed Christian, Underhill initially became involved in a secret society called the Golden Dawn (a creative & honestly pretty kooky band of misfits who studied and practiced magic—both of the "classic" tarot decks most common today were created by Golden Dawn initiates). 2/? ⚓️

Evelyn Underhill (1875 – 1941) was a Christian mystic, poet, novelist, & pacifist. Her vivid mystical encounters began early. Evelyn described them as "abrupt experiences of the peaceful, undifferentiated plane of reality, like the still desert..." She devoted her life to understanding them. 1/? ⚓️

Yeah, they happen during slow wave sleep so they’re usually very simple (one idea, one feeling) rather than a whole dream narrative. I think we are conscious for it, but I never had any memory of it and my daughter doesn’t seem to either! They are super weird. 😕
