Very serious made-the-trains-run-on-time vibes here. (And yes, I know very well Benito didn't do that, and that's the point I'm trying to make).

I honestly worry that if TFG wins, he’s going to expand SCOTUS. If we lose Sotomayor, there could be a 9-2 court, with 6 of them appointed by TFG. If Alito and Thomas resign on his watch, there’d be 7.

I think some of the Italian journalists who defied the Fascists – Moravia, Calvino, Fallaci, Vittorino, Pavese, Montale, Barzini, Rosselli – and then I think of Liptak and wonder why anyone would listen to or read another word from such a petulant little shit.

It's a big difference, and something anyone who's had Italian 1 should know. So, being me (and occasionally intemperate), I fired off a respectful and polite but firm email to the esteemed Professor Hirsch. To my surprise, he responded, briefly: "You're right." He's never fixed the quote. /fin

What's inscribed above the gate to Hell is "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate." That translates, in modern English, to "Abandon every hope, you who enter." (Frequently, it's also translated as "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." 2/x

I just remembered another Dante misquote that is maybe worse than the JFK/MLK muddle. Maybe 25 years ago, someone foisted ED Hirsch's Cultural Literacy on me. Not far in, I got to a Dante quote: "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here." In a word, that's fucking wrong. (OK, that's two words) 1/x

You could do that, though the lesser language guy would be confused by thoughts of your through.

This one drives me nuts because a) Dante never said this, and 2) he places Neutrals entirely outside of Hell. JFK and MLK both misattributed this quote to Dante, and a certain eminent presidential historian has repeatedly cited JFK’s quotation of Dante, never once noting that JFK was utterly wrong.

Continuing this, does “at” work best when citing a web page? e.g., “In an article posted at [link to page] etc.

I have thunk about it, but I know nothing about poloponies. Apophony is like an epiphany, but about vowels.

I have been reading The New York Times for decades. I applied to work there more than 30 years ago. But now I read Joseph Kahn's statement that the paper has offered "full and fair" coverage of President Biden, and that is enough, more than enough. I have canceled my subscription.

Yes, as T. says, it preceded the Spanish Civil War. In Verdun, it was "On ne passe pas," a slogan which appeared on Maginot Line uniform badges in WW2. In '34, French socialist León Blum used "Ils ne passeront pas." Spanish communist Dolores Ibárruri Gómez used "No pasarán" in a 1936 speech.

In the past four days we've witnessed two fine examples of what can happen when voters themselves take the lead, but on this side of the pond we seem happy to be slouching towards Bethlehem, driven like rough beasts whipped by the pundit class.

I honestly looked for an image of the cover elsewhere, because I was absolutely convinced that "A novel" and "New York Times Bestselling Author etc." were notes you'd scribbled in jest on your copy.
