beef is what got Galileo arrested! the church wasn’t mad he wrote about heliocentrism (Copernicus did it years before and they were like *shrug emoji*), they were mad he took the pope’s money to write a book about how dumb the pope was the real story is so much funnier and bitchier than the lore

There was a contemporary of Newton who wrote some discovery in secret code and sent it to the papers. Then a year later announced his discovery because he was paranoid Newton would steal credit.

Oh, for sure. The popes (when they had political power) were absolutely wild. The trial still gave me one of my favorite quotes and the most true thing ever said by a Vatican official “To assert that the Earth revolves around the Sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin”

The church already had beef with Galileo's dad, since he came up with the heretical idea of equal temperament tuning.

For those of us who only know the lore, do you have a recommendation of a book or a podcast or a community theater production to get the actual story in detail?

The Church was unconcerned about heliocentrism when it was published *in the 16th Century*. But they placed De Revolutionibus on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1616 -- citing its contradiction of Scripture -- and that absolutely was one of the issues at Galileo's trial.

It's wild to think about how the supposed quintessential conflict between religion and science is two Italian guys fighting like reality TV had been invented back then.
