The GOP has no role in who the DNC nominates.

I know exactly none of the procedural steps, but I do know that for each of the procedural steps the GOP can’t do jack shit because the steps are all controlled by the DNC. The party decides.

There are two New York Democrats who could do something about this embarrassing situation besides begging for money. Ridiculous. C’mon Schumer and Jeffries. Why don’t you deal with the root issue here?

I hope for the same. I already see the general election in those terms. I hope others will get there. But for some, unfortunately, their post-debate reservations go beyond who they think would be the stronger candidate.

I’ve already had this conversation with others on here. I’m not in the business of dictating to survivors of an atrocity to set aside their reservations and vote. I do think the rest of us all owe a duty to those remaining in Gaza to prevent a Trump presidency, which would be dramatically worse.

I personally think it is indefensible to contemplate not voting for Biden if he’s the nominee, but we have to reckon with that. One person said he had dementia in his family, which was why he said he couldn’t do it.

I’m totally on board with this too. But there’s not absolute parity with supporters of the 2 alternatives. I’ve personally spoken to 2 Democrats who now say they *cannot* support Biden in the general, and heard second-hand about a third who is now planning to vote third-party. I wish it weren’t so.

So, I said what I thought needed saying about Biden, hating every minute as I did. One thing I won’t do, however, is snipe at him if he chooses to stay in. Anyone who does that is in effect campaigning for Trump — and doing so out of sheer pettiness.

I love Project 2025 as a constellation of issues to run against. - The name sounds sinister (Area 51) - It evokes an effectiveness at carrying things out in contrast to “the system held” circa 2017 - Trump’s absurd attempt to distance himself from it makes it seem more sinister

If either the DC case or the Florida documents case keep at their current pace and Trump is convicted, then his appeal based on presidential immunity could come back to to a reformed Court. Trump II.

Instead the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause *limit* states power. Under the GOP theory, the 14th would limit state’s power to define homicides as only applying to born humans, not also fertilized eggs.

It’s a big wink to using the Equal Protection Clause via rightwing courts. The tell is that the Due Process Clause doesn’t empower state legislators to do anything. They already have that power.

Yes. And they’ll sue under Equal Protection, which is conspicuously missing from the platform language. That’s the provision the Alabama Supreme Court highlighted as a potential alternative basis to ban IVF.

Equal Protection for zygotes was the Easter egg the Alabama Supreme Court left in their statutory interpretation decision that outlawed IVF. That’s the sleeper provision to send doctors and others to death row. Bitter irony of it.

It’s a sleight of hand. Equal Protection comes right after Due Process. Why leave it out? States don’t need to be empowered by any part of the Constitution to legislate on a subject, so that’s a red herring (or a vestige of a draft where they claim Congress would be empowered by 14A).

I thought it was telling that the platform left out mention of the Equal Protection Clause even though it would presumably apply just as forcefully to the unborn. Under Equal Protection theory, there’s no need to enact a new abortion-murder law; it’d be required by the Constitution.

I think this is a good example of how Democrats who come to different conclusions about how bad the debate was for Biden still have solid, common ground about the danger Trump poses and the need to push back against blasé framing of those risks from the NY Times.

THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

Le Pen's party (RN) got 143 seats. While a record, that's far (very far) from the 289 they hoped for to govern. How?! Hundreds of Left & Macronist candidates dropped out to help each other block the RN. And millions of voters then voted strategically to get that job done.

Trump has been able to tamp down interest in his batshit ideas and behavior by doing so much out in the open, normalizing it. Project 2025 seemed to be another example of that. But now that he’s disingenuously disavowing P 2025, I wonder if that’ll increase interest in his plans. Hope so.

I'd be shocked if data came back showing a new desire for Biden to step down is a top down phenomenon. Every relatively normal (non political junkie) Dem I talk to, every one, thinks the debate showed Biden needs to step aside. NY Times coverage is annoying, but the debate created this.

What Democrats have wanted to see post-debate is whether Biden has the chops to be the nominee. In that context, it is especially disappointing that his campaign pre-approved the questions for his interviews on Black radio.

Agree. Also, if you’re talking in a public-facing way specifically about “34 felonies” you sound too online and like you’re talking to an informed, strong-Democratic audience. Pointless verging on counterproductive in my book.

I get that this is a bad piece and give 'em all their lumps for it. But I do think the strength of "convicted felon" as a talking point has been generally overestimated. The term you should use, that's more specific and packs more of a punch, is to call him a convicted fraud. That's the crime here.

Setting aside performance, his whole strategy for the debate was completely out-of-wack. As Politico reported and Biden discussed on ABC, he crammed his head full of info as if he’d rack up points for the number of true facts he stated and then seemed surprised by Trump’s lying.

That said, we ignore the general public’s concerns about Biden’s age at our peril. It was all the worse because it played into his biggest and most unavoidable weakness. I also do not think it would be an act of weakness to shift candidates at this stage, but courage. It would be bold.

That sounds like hand-waving and straw men. What I think you fail to appreciate is that many of us had been looking forward to the debate to invigorate the Biden campaign and set the tone for the summer. The debate was not a vindication of my position. It changed my position.

Because the alternative—that people from various walks of life and ideologies who are all part of the Biden coalition watched his objectively bad performance and realized we have to do better—is a much more straightforward explanation.

If Biden steps aside this summer, I will be eternally grateful for all he has done. If Biden remains in the race and wins, I will be relieved but also anxious for him to pass the torch. If Biden loses, I will *never* forgive him or those others responsible for remaining in office. Never.

Biden seemed most cogent and fluid on the questions about Democrats asking him to step aside, which of course he’s been consumed with in recent days, but on the bigger campaign questions he seemed wooden, offering only a quick-and-dirty rehash of anti-Trump arguments.

I’m as dug-in that Biden should step aside after that interview. On the one hand, he didn’t level with us, and on the other his dodging and parrying didn’t seem very effective. There were moments—I’d have to rewatch to pinpoint—where he seemed to lose the thread just a little.
