I feel very strongly that no creature deserves to be overlooked or ridiculed for its existence but these guys really feel like they were made of spare parts just to fill in some gaps in the 🦀 tree of life

Thought I finally got a tarantula wasp shot today, but the abdomen was wrong. A biology PhD student friend showed it to some colleagues, who pointed me to the Alcathoe genus on iNaturalist.

I love a good tide pool and the blobby, sharp, colorful, and diverse inverts found within, but I always have to come back to the land. sea bugs good, land bugs… better

there’s also a whole holiday (today!) dedicated to appreciating this tiny arachnid, with people setting off fireworks in emulation of its iridescence and quick movements.

both were large weevils and would swivel their tarsi back against the tibia, revealing a sharp spine on the “shin” of that segment that they used to poke me. definitely understandable why the spiders left them alone! also note the mites, heavy on 2 but 1 also has a few (of a diff. species)

here’s two lovely members of the genus Cactophagus, both found hanging in orbweaver webs while walking trails in Costa Rica. presumably, they were too large, hard, or scary for the spider to attempt eating!

Not sure I've ever posted this pair together: Urodus parvula moths make this gorgeous cocoon, and are handsome black creatures themselves. I found the unopened cocoon early last year, and the moth emerged some time later. It's such a cool creation. 🖤

as everyone has said, the nonnative ones for sale are probably fine to use; but to answer your question I’m not sure if any mantises are native there! I believe Stagmomantis can be found just a little north of Detroit but seems to be none to few observations (iNat) from central central Michigan
