Been walking around with Affliction (1997). There were lots of lost angry middle-aged men movies in the 90s but it's maybe the darkest and truest. The way Nolte's situation just steadily degrades. "He had no perspective to retreat to, even in a crisis." The culminating violence is almost a relief.

It speaks to the peculiar and depressing immutability of our politics that, after George Floyd, well-meaning people felt the need to castigate themselves for enjoying Law & Order while city governments passed zero meaningful police reforms.

I know secret movies aren't new and stars have always been in shit that didn't work, that Paramount dumped in February, but Netflix is producing them at a clip that suggests a deep philosophical commitment to wasting famous people's time.

TCM is the perfect bar channel. It's either playing a good movie like Apollo 13 or The Apartment, or it's some bullshit technicolor Robin Hood adaptation from 1949 that would suck to actually watch but looks really nice on mute for 45 seconds at a time.

Thinking about a less steroidal Randy Savage type who would come to the Port Authority to work the ships, unload windmill parts. One time he drove a forklift by a secluded spot where I was lazing, hiding from work and boomed "I FUCKIN' LOVE IT!" Shot me a thumbs up. I've never felt more like a man.

Appreciate it, man. Your "We Are Not Men" series inspired me to pitch Harry. Which led to me doing a few pieces for Vice—and a bunch of D&Ds, which paid well because they were in the print mag. It was a time and place, and it wasn't great, but we could dream things that are firmly impossible now.
