@davidklion.bsky.social has a book about the legacy of neocon foreign policy forthcoming that I can't wait to read. This article demonstrates why.

For months I’ve been trying to understand Biden’s disastrous Israel policy. The conventional wisdom is that he has always been Israel’s best friend in Washington. But what I’ve found is almost more disturbing: decades of maddening inconsistency.

Good morning! It's not the biggest thing going on in the world right now, but I had a fun time profiling the inimitable
@whstancil.bsky.social for New York Magazine. He's running for the Minnesota state legislature and testing whether the posting-to-praxis pipeline is real.

For the new issue of Bookforum, I reviewed Joshua Green's "The Rebels," which represents the mainstreaming of the left’s narrative on economics, as told through the rise of Warren, Sanders, and AOC

I’m proud to stand with two dozen Jewish colleagues who decry the weaponization of antisemitism and the ongoing attacks on our campus and on higher education around the country. If you’re a Columbia affiliate I hope you’ll put your name to this too. www.columbiaspectator.com/opinion/2024...

Our cover story this month takes on the toxic workplace at Tesla, expertly reported by @brycecovert.bsky.social—plus Kate Wagner on the tyranny of the kitchen, Michelle Alexander on Martin Luther King Jr's anti-war speech, @davidklion.bsky.social on Biden's foreign policy, and more.

For @thenation.com, I reviewed Alex Ward’s The Internationalists, a well-reported book on Biden’s foreign policy team that unfortunately presents a resilient comeback narrative that already feels obsolete in the wake of 10/7.

It's not the meanest review you'll read today; I hope it's at least fair!

If you live in New York and are registered as a Democrat, you can and should submit a primary ballot today just like this. The machine will ask if you meant to leave it blank, and yes, you did.

Two hours ago the former head of the ADL tweeted this disgraceful lie about Jonathan Glazer, who actually said, "We stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation." He has yet to acknowledge his error or delete it.

I see how the sentence was a bit confusing but that's what he was criticizing, the abuse of the Holocaust and Jewish identity

He didn't refute his Jewishness, he refuted it being used to justify atrocities

Jonathan Glazer is a hero for speaking out against the occupation and Israel's assault on Gaza, *as a Jew*, in his acceptance speech. As I argue here, Zone of Interest isn't just about the Holocaust, it's about our complicity in atrocities happening right now.

Not super-closely but enough to know the far right is on the rise there, and to know that much of the establishment is preoccupied with silencing critics of Israel (including a fair number of Jews)

Lol believe me I was aware of recent German history prior to watching ZOI. But it was a fresh and vivid reminder of why it grates so much to see Germans today taking out their justifiable guilt and shame on innocent Palestinians (and on left-wing Jews!)

No? The Times is the indispensable newspaper and its coverage of Israel has been all over the place, some of it great and some of it awful. I'm glad I could make this case there, where it will reach more people and carry more weight than it would anywhere else.

This review is a corrective to Richard Brody’s misreading of the film. David nails exactly what makes The Zone of Interest so unsettling: Auschwitz, like Gaza, represented as an omnipresent crematorium burning day and night, threatening to lapse into the quotidian. I couldn’t sleep after seeing it.

For NYT Opinion, I wrote about The Zone of Interest, which might be the most compelling film out of a very strong 2023 best picture field. I argue that it confronts us with our own complicity in atrocities today, and specifically those in Gaza.
