For months I’ve been trying to understand Biden’s disastrous Israel policy. The conventional wisdom is that he has always been Israel’s best friend in Washington. But what I’ve found is almost more disturbing: decades of maddening inconsistency.

Two hours ago the former head of the ADL tweeted this disgraceful lie about Jonathan Glazer, who actually said, "We stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation." He has yet to acknowledge his error or delete it.

Jonathan Glazer is a hero for speaking out against the occupation and Israel's assault on Gaza, *as a Jew*, in his acceptance speech. As I argue here, Zone of Interest isn't just about the Holocaust, it's about our complicity in atrocities happening right now.

Lol believe me I was aware of recent German history prior to watching ZOI. But it was a fresh and vivid reminder of why it grates so much to see Germans today taking out their justifiable guilt and shame on innocent Palestinians (and on left-wing Jews!)

No? The Times is the indispensable newspaper and its coverage of Israel has been all over the place, some of it great and some of it awful. I'm glad I could make this case there, where it will reach more people and carry more weight than it would anywhere else.

This review is a corrective to Richard Brody’s misreading of the film. David nails exactly what makes The Zone of Interest so unsettling: Auschwitz, like Gaza, represented as an omnipresent crematorium burning day and night, threatening to lapse into the quotidian. I couldn’t sleep after seeing it.

For NYT Opinion, I wrote about The Zone of Interest, which might be the most compelling film out of a very strong 2023 best picture field. I argue that it confronts us with our own complicity in atrocities today, and specifically those in Gaza.
