From growing up in a desert: If you have stuff to do, you’re done by 10 am, and you’ll pick it back up after sunset. Daytime is for being quiet and using little energy. This includes cooking. You don’t need hot food. Boil eggs, have hummus and cold cuts, cubed cheese, fruit and snack vegetables. 1/

My father was stationed near Port Arthur Texas early in WWII. My mother had survived Missouri summers but this was new. One of the other wives, who was from Wisconsin, asked a local woman how she managed. The answer: I get up at dawn and do my doings, then I lie in the bed and eat ice. Sound praxis!

Figured out last summer (heat dome was *bad* here): if you use plain yogurt as the base for mixing up ranch dip, carrots/celery/radishes/peppers and ranch constitute an actual freaking meal.

Upholstery holds heat. A hard chair or the floor is likely cooler than a sofa. The best floor is a tile floor. If you must be outside, cover your head with something as close to white as you have. A white head cover reflects solar radiation better than skin or even the blondest hair. Skin, too.

You can buy these plastic rings full of phase change material. They go around your necks and melt at a fixed temperature and provide cooling for several hours. Unlike a wet towel they don’t warm up or care about humidity.
