The EU ETS Directive itself states that, given the need for urgent economy-wide emission reductions, countries should be able to act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through other policies as well

Indeed - unanticipated and unexpected side effects seem bound to happen, and other countries and regions be affected. Better to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with what’s needed

Alarming… the warning signs are so clear, yet some of the same old lobby groups are still trying to block even reporting of climate impacts

One of the most ominous risks for Europe is that of a major change in Atlantic ocean currents. Recent science suggests it has been greatly underestimated in the past -including by me, having worked on it for over 30 years. Here my half-hour presentation in Vilnius last week!

““The EU has been and can remain a laboratory for an efficient and fair implementation of climate policy,” writes Jos Delbeke, the bloc’s erstwhile top climate bureaucrat, in a new must-read book co-written with climate colleagues.” (with link: www.taylorfrancis.com/books/oa-edi...)

There is a bright spot to this jarring news:

Scientists aren't saying this is inevitable, or that we lack the necessary knowledge or technology.

Rather, it is because of the failure of political leaders and corporations. And we can do something about that.

A whole year of record breaking ocean temperatures.

This warmth has significant effects on ocean ecosystems. A large fraction of the world’s human population rely on protein from the ocean to live. Disruption to life in the ocean does affect us all.

The images of the planes just rolling through a flat surface of water at Dubai airport...........it's so stunning to me how we're delivered the physical imagery of the climate crisis every few weeks, each time in a completely new way. None of this is subtle at all.

Long-durational thermal storage is coming.

The world's largest thermal storage project is underway in Finland with a capacity of 90 GWh, enough to meet the heating demands of a medium-sized city for up to a year.

Thanks for reporting on this! Without visibility, there’s marketing without accountability. I remember industry-funded newspaper adverts claiming EU climate measures were unnecessary as there’d be 10% SAF use by 2017 without them www.wearepossible.org/our-reports/...

No worries, I’ll see if colleagues can follow up directly. As the EU ETS can cover up to 100% of the cost-difference for alternative fuels from fossil kerosene for flights from January 2024, the traceability of fuels is moving more into the spotlight

🚨New research shows the magnitude of fossil fuel industry lobbying against support for green tech, while the same industry benefits from historically colossal government subsidies (at a rate of US$13 million ***per minute*** in 2022, according to the IMF).

Thanks for an excellent podcast! There’s a real likelihood that Hannah Ritchie’s book will be used politically by vested interests to encourage complacency, and the interview confirms that this’d be a terrible outcome.
