“…past predictions of global warming have proved largely correct. To persist with scepticism is immoral and stupid. Even a free-market fanatic cannot deny that environmental externalities are a form of market failure. Climate is the biggest externality of all.”

Markets will solve nothing, because they are profiting from it. No regulations will save this planet, as long as markets will exist.

Luckily, there's a highly influential group of people over in America currently formulating a detailed plan on exactly how to deal with the threats posed by climate change. Unluckily, the group are strongly tied to the oil industry, and the plan is Project 2025.

Give a 2 year old a gallon of ice cream, and he will eat the whole thing then blame you for the tummy ache. Same with most speculators in the fiscal arena.

One day those market forces will sell cylinders with breathable air and detoxified drinkable water. Also syntetic food, think soylent green.

Ok, I'll admit it - I didn't expect to hear this from that publication. Pity they couldn't figure it out BEFORE we were facing total collapse...

Nope. There's no money in mitigating the carbon already in the atmosphere.

Except they do deny it, because the people who believe a "free market" can ever physically exist are not coincidentally the same people who don't know what "externalities" are.

The problem with free markets is that liars are not held accountable. The end result is nonsense like carbon capture is sold as a current option when in reality it is of little consequence to the imminent issues.

Market forces are enough...if externalities are internalized. That would mean a significant carbon tax. The price of coal & gas power would make nukes look cheap, EVs would be way cheaper over their lifetimes, and companies and individuals would work hard to reduce their consumption.
