UPDATE: What is happening in France today? Left candidates who came in 3rd are dropping out of the runoffs to block the far-right. *Many* Macronists, including incumbents, are doing the same when they came in third. But... many said they won't. (I'd say about half/half right now? Deadline tmrw.)

There's a lot of analysis today that places the french far-right in the context of the Second World War. I'd say the Algerian independence war is at least as crucial. Le Pen as descendent of the colonials who killed a million Algerians and tried to stage a coup before being kicked out.

The two alarming aspects of yesterday's vote for me: 1. The RN's 2nd-round ceiling has become a 1st-round floor. 2. The French right considers the far left more of a danger than the far right. There are various historical parallels here, though the two extremes represent different threats today.
