Many of the players we spoke with for the book felt haunted by the specter of CTE and other long-term consequences. One explained, “I feel like there’s a good chance that I will have CTE … But I won’t find out until I die, which isn’t comforting at all.”

It got to the point, Borrow says, that “I remember sitting in my locker, fully dressed, completely dreading the idea of practice. I knew that the entire time would be spent just surviving.”

A third player explained it this way, “So like, ‘camp fog’ or ‘camp brain’ was something we’d discuss. And it was just so normal. I was never diagnosed with a concussion.”

"...They did the concussion test, [found out] that I have a concussion. I sat out for maybe six practices, like a week and a half, maybe? Was right back out there like nothing happened.”

Another told us, “My helmet went flying, like 30 yards. And instantly, I started crying. I lost my breath. It wasn’t like I got the wind knocked out of me. It was like when you’re so scared that you can’t breathe … they sent me back out on the field..."

A former player described his experience with concussions this way: “I could barely do school … I would forget what I was talking about mid-sentence. I’d be forgetting everything that happened like 10 minutes ago."

Compelling evidence suggests that the NCAA, the main governing body of college sports, has long understood the magnitude of the danger posed by the sport.

Participation in football also appears to increase the probability of developing Parkinson’s disease by 61% compared to athletes in other sports, a risk that is in turn 2.9 times higher for those who have played at college or pro level.

We know this -- every 2.6 years of participation in football doubles the chances of contracting CTE, symptoms of which include “memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, suicidality, parkinsonism, and progressive dementia.”

Even more: “I was both suicidal and experiencing self-hatred … It was the first time I doubted my ability to trust myself with something as basic as how I was feeling …" This is the reality of college football.

“The six-month stretch where I was both going through concussion-related symptoms and continuing to engage in football activities was the worst time of my life,” the former Vanderbilt OL told us.

As we discuss in our forthcoming book The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-American Game, head injuries are a defining feature of college football, just as it is an inextricable aspect of the tackle version of the sport at every level." Our Latest in @guardian.

Gambling is causing an occupational health and safety crisis for athletic workers and the leagues they work for and sports media complex are entirely responsible because, as always, in capitalism value comes first and the worker might as well be dead at the end of the day.

Either way. I’ve been done with that person since August and I’m so grateful to have done that. I wish I had done it sooner, but that’s on me. Be kind and don’t be racist.

For the grad students and ECRs who may read this — please know your supervisor is not you. You are not a reflection of your supervisor, unless you want to be. You owe them nothing, even if they act like you do and treat you as such.

Academia is built in such a way where a supervisor may wield an incredible amount of power over students — often long after they have graduated. I can do little to change this now other than condemn it and do everything in my power to not repeat the cycle in my own work.

In August, I resigned as co-editor of a book series with Emerald. I have asked to retract my name from the publications listed — although I doubt that will happen. This also does little to change any material benefit I have already received.

All in all, this person was my dissertation chair and we co-authored three book chapters and edited 4 books together. I got a job and earned tenure in part due to this professional relationship and materially benefited from it.

Although I disassociated myself with this person — I have to acknowledge and make amends for the hurt and pain amplifying and/or “liking” stuff like this causes. I’m not sure how to do that. But I will begin be vehemently denouncing the liking of these hateful tweets.

During my time as a graduate student, this person cultivated what I felt to be an unprofessional relationship with me. This impacted me for many years on the tenure-track and continues to make me feel uncomfortable today.

I wrote a dissertation on how media and politicians have used the framing of “radicalization” to alienate, exclude, and discriminate against Muslims. You can find it easily. The above rhetoric is exactly the type of thing I have worked to counter.

I cut all ties with my PhD supervisor in August 2023 because of an increasing trend of behavior I vehemently disagreed with — something I struggled with even as a grad student. Little did I know how much worse it would get and how low it could go.

To all graduate students and ECRs: you owe NOTHING to your PhD supervisor. If they act like you do, they’re probably not a very good person.

Universities love to tout the work of their faculty when it suits them. When faculty use their expertise against university objectives, those same university cower in fear. This is the contemporary university.

What can we learn from the horrifying allegations that Penn State 🏈 coach James Franklin tried to take back a scholarship from a player who tried to take his own life? That interference is seemingly normal.

James Franklin is a ghoul. As we have documented, he is probably closer to the norm in college football.
