“What I found was that the… monsters, the gang leaders, the drug dealers, they have more compassion than our coaches have. They are more human than our coaches are. So these monsters of these dark alleys will show you compassion and concern and care before your coaches would.”

The complete massacre of athletic figures and destruction of athletic facilities in Gaza is yet another facet of this atrocity.
Israel simply should not be permitted to compete in the Olympics or any other international competition.

my wife got a concussion once
for about six months, "moving your head slightly wrong" or even "thinking about the wrong kind of thing" (language learning, in her case) would lead to pain, exhaustion, disorientation
forcing someone to play football under those conditions is straight-up torture

“In a 1973 letter, NCAA lawyer Donald Wilson wrote to the head of the body’s football rules committee that it should ignore warnings from medical experts of the dangers of head-first tackling because, “In my opinion, any heed paid to their suggestions will destroy present-day football as we know it”

This is beautiful to see and something I’ve long awaited: the professional athlete unions acting in substantive solidarity with campus athletic workers, in this case by supporting the Dartmouth MBB union before the NLRB.

This above all is the goal of the NCAA, conferences, + universities: to deny campus athletic workers employee status and it’s attendant protections, bargaining rights, and leverage from potential labor action. If Congress legislates it, they are utterly failing athletes.
