Three new dam projects were announced by the premier of Sarawak without prior consultation of communities, the managing director of a Sarawak-based NGO tells Mongabay.
Across Mexico, FIFA World Cup infrastructure threatens biodiversity and communities
"In Mexico City, locals say they haven’t been consulted about new roads and building projects that could threaten their water resources as well as tree cover."
Affordability is relative, of course, and wages in Japan are comparatively lower, but the people I spoke with in Tokyo metro informed me their housing costs were more or less affordable. The train system there is probably the most impressive I've seen anywhere in my whole life.
I use my car in Sydney once a month at best, but I also live super close to the CBD, and if I didn't, I would probably need a car. The big issue is well-located housing is not a thing the country invests in. Putting more houses on the outskirts does pretty much nothing to address the issue.
After visiting a country that has public transportation (and housing) that is accessible, affordable-ish, and prevalent I am overwhelmed by how far Australia has to go.
Unsurprisingly, both these things (decent public transit and housing) are critical to address the fight against climate change.
Scale is important here.
A chunk of forest nearly the size of Ireland burned in one calendar year in Canada in 2023 (Not normal).
Carbon inside trees that can be hundreds of years old encompassing that much land isn't reabsorbed in a swift time frame. That takes decades if regrowth is successful
Pretty astounding that Canada's 2023 wildfires emitted four times more carbon than global aviation, but these emissions are not counted under Canada's accounting standards. Liz Kimbrough has the story for Mongabay: news.mongabay.com/2024/06/cana...
I'm honored to report that @erikhoffner.bsky.social and myself have won 2nd place for Best Coverage of Indigenous Communities in the Radio/Podcast category at the Indigenous Media Awards.
This week on the Mongabay Newscast, I chat with the program manager of Mongabay's newest bureau in Africa, David Akana.
We discuss his favorite spot in nature, what mainstream news often misses when covering Africa, and what he hopes to achieve with the new bureau: news.mongabay.com/2024/06/in-t...
Here on the Mongabay Newscast we hosted one of the pioneers of the biotic pump theory, Anastassia Makarieva, to discuss the climate implications from the loss of forest ecosystems. This is a great interview from my colleague @racheldonald.bsky.social. Listen here: news.mongabay.com/2024/06/if-f...
The point about how complexity becomes this death spiral where wonks obsess over details and totally forget why they're doing the thing in the first place applies so broadly!!
Hey BlueSky climate/journalist community! I'm hosting a webinar on Planetary Health tomorrow with panelists from Johns Hopkins/Planetary Health Alliance, and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Come join us at 9pm UTC on the 13th.
Burning wood pellets is not 'renewable energy,' but many countries consider it one. This is a tremendous problem for global efforts to slow the climate and biodiversity crises, says Justin Catanoso on this Mongabay podcast episode with @racheldonald.bsky.social: news.mongabay.com/2024/06/burn...
“There needs to be a rethinking of what people’s place is in the landscape and how that intersects with a kind of new relationship between people and nature as well.”
On the latest Mongabay Podcast, economist Rebecca Adamson speaks with @racheldonald.bsky.social about Indigenous economics systems, and why Wall Street's attempt to financialize nature misses the big picture: news.mongabay.com/2024/06/what...
Yep. Every night I sleep in a house that goes down to like 10 or 9 C in the winter (or lower). In the summer it can be about 28 or 29 C when it’s bedtime, and it might go down to 23 or 24 but takes so long to cool off.
Yes here in Sydney it’s just insanely hot in the house in summer (no AC). In winter it gets chilly very quickly as well. And goes down to about 50 or 48 F at night and that sounds okayish on the surface but in reality is super cold
The NSW government is allowing native logging to continue in proposed boundaries of the great koala national park, Stephen Long tells me. Listen our conversation on the latest @mongabay.bsky.social podcast. news.mongabay.com/2024/05/aust...
I was very excited to edit this week's episode on the Mongabay Newscast. @racheldonald.bsky.social speaks with Jon Moses about the 'Right to Roam.' A movement that seeks to reclaim common rights to access, use and enjoy both private and public land.
I’d love to see the stats on how many times the Federal Government has investigated a coal, oil or gas company that receives government grants or subsidies, following a community-based complaint.
Almost a year ago I interviewed @danilic.bsky.social about his Times Square billboard campaign around COP 26. Well, he has another one going right now to get award winning artist Vincent Namatjira's work up on the screens: open.substack.com/pub/arationa...

I know where the Australian government could find some savings in the budget: "Fossil fuel subsidies cost Australians $14.5 billion in 2023-24, equivalent to $27,581 for every minute of every day – $540 for every person in Australia." #ClimateChange#FossilFuels#ClimateEmergency#Budget2024
I told myself I was going to be positive this week, and not complain about the rain, but in just the first six days of May, we've already seen almost a months worth of rain, and there is still like another week straight left of rain. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
At the 9th Our Ocean Conference in Athens, Mongabay’s Elizabeth Claire Alberts interviewed oceanographer and marine biologist Sylvia Earle about the pressures facing our oceans, actions needed to turn things around, and how to find hope for the future.
The fossil fuel industry spent decades sowing doubt about the dangers of burning oil and gas, experts and Democratic lawmakers testified on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, which honors one grassroots activist from each of the six inhabited continents.
Murrawah Johnson has been awarded the 2024 Goldman Environmental Prize. I speak with her on the latest Mongabay Newscast about the landmark court victory she helped lead in 2022 in Australia, the first linking the impacts of climate change with human rights: news.mongabay.com/2024/04/2024...
We recently learned that the Matsés Native Community terminated their agreement with the Peruvian company Get Life following a Mongabay investigation (mongabay.cc/T96LwS) that exposed how multiple companies made false claims to persuade Indigenous communities to surrender their rights
