Those ridiculous rosettes that British politicians are wearing look so comically sad on the losers.

We know what to do. Top of the list is to replace fossil fuels that account for nearly three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions. The most effective tool available is zero-emissions electricity | Alan Finkel www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Dutton's push for nuclear power instead of renewables is the most cynical environmental dog-whistling to come out of the Coalition for years, and that bar is pretty damn low.
He knows it's unviable but is perfectly happy to burn the world to win the election.

PSA to anyone who gets interviewed by a journalist: If they agree to let you check your direct quotes (which, BTW, they don't have to, just as you don't have to agree to the interview), DO NOT REWRITE YOUR WORDS MERELY TO MAKE YOURSELF SOUND BETTER. Checking quotes is a courtesy, not an invitation.

gosh no - we need it. But also need to recognise that it can and has been weaponised as a harassment tool. Challenge is to recognise when it is vexatious and when it is genuine, or at least be resourced enough to deal with large volumes of requests if/when they come in.

Abuse and harassment of scientists escalated during the pandemic, and has become the new status quo for science.
The challenge for institutions is how best to protect and support scientists who are being targeted.
I explored this question for Nature:

The recent actions of certain members of the Cumberland City Council remind us that this fight isn't over. But we've also come so far towards equal rights and equal love, and that's worth celebrating.

It was fantastic hearing the many articulate, passionate speakers against this book ban at the council meeting last night, including several members of the council. So glad this ignorant homophobic dog-whistling bigotry got overturned. May book bans never raise their ugly head in Australia again.

For what it's worth, I've been listening to oil and gas executives repeat this same reasoning over the last 18 months, right down to comments about how "no one wants to see demand destruction" by ending gas connections to new homes.

My understanding is this is the price per megawatt/hour of electricity right now around Australia. That massive spike in NSW is due to issues with some coal-fired power stations. We pay wholesale prices so we're monitoring it. Most people pay a flat rate so no concern.

Yikes - some massive energy price spikes happening in NSW right now. Time to switch off a few appliances for a couple of hours.
We pay wholesale rates through Amber, so we get alerted to this stuff.

I think the Walkleys should drop the Ampol sponsorship. I respect the decision of those who choose to boycott, and those who raise their concerns in other ways. I get a little surprised when people use Elon Musk's X to suggest journalists who do enter lack self-respect. Ethics are tricky, huh.

Reporting on the whole 'airborne' saga is nerve-wracking, given how high scientific passions run – and justifiably so – on the question of exactly what the term 'airborne' means in the context of infectious respiratory disease. Here's the latest on this hot-button issue, from Nature:

Indiscriminate and targeted killing of civilians. Deliberate mass destruction of infrastructure and public services. Induced famine. None of this is "normal" warfare against a military force. How could what the Israeli government is doing in #Gaza not be classified as genocide?
