I too used to be an 'oh, NOW you care' person when I was younger. I was profoundly annoyed with ppl who didn't "understand" what I already knew & then all of a sudden started caring. Then I realized that was a ME issue, not at all about them. EYE was annoyed while THEY were coming to consciousness.

I think it's mostly a case of the left-ward part of the party being aware of the stakes here, while the centrist grouping still seems to think of this as any other election they can game for positioning and better headlines.

I would amend "nothing they can do" to "nothing additional that they can do." There will be rat-fucking regardless of who's on the ballot. (That said, the political price of "candidate chosen by the party elites" strikes me as wholly unknowable, but nevertheless substantial.)
