‘In the shifting, centuries-long history of his reception, Chaucer has been read as both irreverent and pious, experimental and traditional, cosmopolitan and quintessentially English.’

The Lyell Lectures return to the Weston Library!
Five lectures will explore how works of different kinds – the military histories written by Julius Caesar, the poetry of Catullus, and the teachings of early Christians – were passed down over time.

Head of Book Conservation Nicole Gilroy definitely knows about pigments!
Her tattoo is artfully shown here by a skin of parchment (which our medieval manuscripts are written on) - a kind of post-mortem tattoo process!
The design might resonate with Terry Pratchett fans...

Meanwhile, this was one of Helen's first tattoos and is still her most asked about.
It's the main theme from Holst’s 'Jupiter' (from The Planets), which is one of Helen's favourite pieces to play on the cello.

Bach’s relentless schedule of composing a new cantata every week means that the manuscript shows characteristic signs of being written in great haste.
The corrosive iron-gall ink has eaten away at the paper in a few places, particularly where notes have been corrected or amended.
