I loved Xanatos so much growing up. Every other line of dialogue from him was something like "Damnation is a cold blade best gripped by one's own hand" and all five-year-old me could say was "Yes. Uh huh. EXACTLY that."

Alan Moore adaptations are often accused of missing the thematic "point" of the comic. And I feel like that's sort of true, but not as big of a deal as the fact that they miss out on all of the cool stuff that Moore implemented in a way that's only possible IN comics.

I still love the fact that when Rob Zombie announced his The Munsters movie, everyone was like "Oooh, I wonder how vulgar and awful it's gonna be" and then he ended up making the closest thing we'll ever get to a modern rendition of Munsters episode from 1965

Yes! Inevitably the credits will hit on a movie. But that ending to The Killing Joke is eternal. Those two men, dead or alive, will be haunted for as long as they exist.

Anyway, I think that's what I'm most apprehensive about when I see "Based on the comic by Alan Moore." Not that it won't be like the comic, but that it won't feel like it.

Even something like The Killing Joke will inevitably miss out on the staging that makes the comic so simultaneously beautiful and horrific. That shared laugh in the end where it feels like a cruel universe speaking instead of an actual character as it spans across panels.

It's such a weird, empty movie. Like trying to play the same notes with a different instrument.

The same goes for From Hell (you could make it as a murder mystery, but no other art would allow for its patient yet towering melancholy and surrealism) or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (What other medium would allow for such an intake of visual information and reference?)

Like, Watchmen is so simultaneously sprawling and fractured in both its narrative and the way that it's designed. You get a certain sense of pacing, worldbuilding and discovery that you can never recreate in any other medium. It literally isn't possible.

Big fan of the 20/20 "Batman's Back" segment where Barbara Walters questions the idea of "yet another" comic book character getting a movie adaptations, but because it's 1989, the only two examples are Superman and Popeye.

Love the fact that in the town hall scene in JAWS, there's nothing on the chalkboard until Quint shows up, meaning that he made a little drawing to show off how scary a giant shark is to help his sales pitch.

Thinking about this page from Urasawa's Pluto where he managed to do a heartbreaking bit of emotionality from a robot physically incapable of emoting all entirely through panel composition and framing. One of the all-time greats of comics.

I mean, if it's an adaptation, I can grant it a little bit of wiggle room because there's already a story there. But so much of the joy of watching a series comes from being there for all of its little intricacies.

I don't know how you fall in love with a story that way. "I only want to watch the parts that matter and skip all of the rest" turns the full course meal of a TV show into a bullet point protein shake.

Whenever people ask what episodes or seasons of a show that they can skip, it always sounds like they don't actually want to watch the show. They just want to check it off their list.

Tod Browning's films have grown on me a lot. For a while, I judged him solely based on Dracula, a film that I only half enjoy thanks to much of the middle section being so flat. Watching things like Freaks, The Unknown, The Mystic, The Unholy Three and Iron Man changed my mind.

Also, anyone that has ever actually read Tolkien knows that his work is a pretty wild blend of incredible amounts of detail and open-ended "What is that actually supposed to be?" moments. There is so much room for adaptation and interpretation. Using it to fuel a culture war lite is pretty dumb.
