Agree 100% that "hidden" (taken for granted, ignored, overlooked...) work needs to be recognized. Of these 3 suggestions, 2 still seek to "find a way". The only concrete one is awards. Fine, but recognizes only a few. Looking forward to developments in this area.

Just had a great week at the FASEB Cilia and Flagella conference. The Biology was awesome, but also - when in St. Paul, MN - I highly recommend a stay at the Covington Inn B&B on Harriet Island. It's a luxurious tugboat charming, comfortable, close to the conf. centres with bird watching!

One of the upsides of higher ed twitter in its heyday was the way it connected researchers, funders, and think tanky folks. I'd like to think it somewhat closed the distance between these groups. I don't think bsky has come close to that, meaning that distance is right back where it once was.

#Budget2024 makes the largest investment in 20+ years for grad students & postdocs!

It will support financial needs, boost mental well-being, allow focus on research, & promote diversity by easing barriers for underrepresented groups. #SOSBudget2024

May 5 2022: I spoke to the #SRSR. I said that investing in graduate students and postdoctoral scholars means investing in Canada.

Today #Budget2024 invested in these researchers, and in doing so has invested in Canada.

THANK YOU to everyone who worked towards this! @supportourscience.bsky.social

Thrilled to see new investments in Canadian postdocs in #Budget2024 $825M to support future research talent. $1.8B to support grants. Federal postdoctoral fellowships will increase from $40k to $70k! An amazing investment. Thanks @supportourscience.bsky.social for advocating!

After 21 years, #postdocs hope for a raise! March 19 I gave a press statement as CAPS/ACPP Chair alongside Postdocs, grad students, and MPs to highlight the urgent need for increased postdoctoral research funding in #Budget2024 🇨🇦 We hope to work together to support the future of Canada’s research!

I'm heading to Ottawa: Low pay is today's greatest challenge for Canadian postdocs. We're hoping for increased investment for grad students, postdocs, and grants in #Budget2024 This funding will ensure the best future for Canada's research.

In clinical trials of new treatments, when the treatment is clearly and obviously immediately effective it is sometimes considered unethical to continue to withhold it from the control group. Pretty sure we passed that milestone about a decade ago with basic income experiments.

My priorities this year: Launch of the 2024 National Postdoc Survey, increasing membership + engagement with institutions and orgs in Canada and abroad, and continuing to advocate for increased pay with
@supportourscience.bsky.social as well as benefits and protections by supporting Postdoc Unions!

Honoured to announce my new role as Chair of the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars, and to announce the names of our dedicated members of the 2024 Executive Council. A privilege to be able to work with each of them this year:

I dreamt last night about a live cell imaging experiment: some fluorescently tagged lipid binding protein that was surprisingly enriched in the nucleus and had this really cool oscillatory focal organization. Odd! Now I want a channel where people share their science dreams

Very cool talk today at #CellBio2023 by Ismail Abdus-Saboor about sensation of gentle touches. I recommend to check his papers, I learned so much about the importance of touches, why we want and need to be touched and what happens when we are touched.

#cellbio2023 fact of the hour: Immediate early gene expression in neurons are important for learning (ex. speech!) previously I knew about IEGs in cancer and wound responses, so this is a revelation. Are IEGs the preferred gene program for anything fast? Are there other programs like this?

Based on the number of ASCB related posts I’m seeing on the other site vs hardly any here it looks like we need to increase the cell biology (and microscopy) community over here. Still tricky to move to Bluesky exclusively…

I also think Postdocs would be more likely to participate in events if 1. they felt they had time and 2. if they didn't have substantial mental health burdens with poor access to the solutions.

I think the solution is improving postdoc working conditions - Postdocs need adequate compensation, benefits, stability, protection from toxic environments (career mobility can't hang on 1 recommendation letter). "Not having time" to do important things, is also something I hear a lot.

I hear a lot that Postdocs aren't engaged enough at events at their institution. My response usually: they're depressed, overwhelmed, burning out. Well... CAPS/ACPP just released their 2020 national survey report and a jaw dropping 79% of 🇨🇦 Postdocs report experiencing severe mental health issues.

I was bottom 50% income, but had a very privileged highschool experience and was strongly encouraged to take multiple SAT prep courses and buy multiple prep-books. It was very clear that these tests largely test your access ($) to test preparation not your education or intelligence. Shameful.

One unexpected thing in my qualitative study w natural scientists (one-hour interviews) is how deeply, deeply sad the climate scientists are. They say things like "you have enough information from us, why won't anyone act?" -- the psychological distress these people are enduring is very great.

I could not be less surprised by this. I am a data point. I've watched so many (and I mean TOO MANY) of my women colleagues experience the same. Women networks in academia are so fragile because there's never a sense of security or permanence. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
