I’m no expert, but it’s probably not a good sign for a political campaign when the best possible thing that could happen to it is the candidate dropping dead

Meanwhile over at the Telegraph, a leader writer wonders if a community taking part in the democratic process means its time to stop "handing citizenship out" to them. The absolute state of this.

I think you'll really enjoy his Our Ancestors trilogy (Baron in the Trees, especially). They share a lot of stylistic and thematic elements with your books and they are just lovely, lovely stories.

Just finished reading Marcovaldo this morning and am in the midst of reading Italian Folktales with my kiddo and love the idea of "lightness" as a descriptor of characters like Marcovaldo and of the joyfulness of Calvino's writing style

I think what makes this difficult to discuss with any kind of rigor is that Biden staying in is bad and Biden dropping out is also bad! There are no good options available so we’re all flailing to figure out which bad thing is gonna be like 15% better than the worse thing

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”

This is a key point. The US has only really been a democracy since 1964—at the earliest and if we're being generous.

As people note the normalization of autocracy and fascism, I’ll remind everyone of how “normalized” we have built the idea of Jim Crow and segregation into our sense of the past as just part of how life was rather than an oppressive non-democracy.

Few countries have a worse constitution than the US, with the exception of Canada—whose "get out of the constitution free" clause means that pretty much everything in there is a recommendation more than a requirement.

The US continues its slide into outright authoritarianism. You don’t have to be a scholar of fascism to know how much courts have aided and abetted autogolpes and the like. Terrifying beyond measure. There are no safe places.

My critique of Butler was always that I needed to read someone else's writing on Butler to actually understand their arguments. But clearly they've taken that sort of critique to heart, it's really good.
