Curious about how TV news coverage of the widespread campus protests and police responses this spring differed from the coverage in the late 1960s? So were we! Overall there were lots of similarities in the structure of the reporting and the images featured 1/

Our latest investigation uncovered a disinformation campaign targeting France's snap elections, using AI-generated content to manipulate voter opinions. The operation, CopyCop, used large language models (LLMs) to create fake news outlets with a conservative bias against President Macron. Read more:

No wind out here in WA. Perfectly clear skies. About 70 at 7pm. Maybe 62-65 at sunset.

It’s a gorgeous evening. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a pleasant sunset out here. Typically, I’d be freezing!

I allowed students to use ChatGPT in 2023 for an assignment of their choice.. The output (shared thru group discussions) infected the class. The final exam had the worst average ever, by 10 points. It’s not that students didn’t know the answers. It’s that they had “learned” things that were untrue.

Nope, that's not what I said -- at all. What I said is that the legitimacy of the Democratic candidate is likely to be the target of information operations, not that all criticism is illegitimate.

Whether Biden drops out or continues, I expect a primary target of foreign info operations this year to be the legitimacy of the Democratic candidate and the legimitacy of the courts in relation to the the GOP candidate. Expect them to target audiences on both sides and exploit organic criticism.

This is one of the most disturbing stories I’ve read in awhile. The profound callousness. The inability for parents & others to reach these kids. The capitulation to arguments about “free speech” even in the face of clear harms to the victims (& their perpetrators). And the failure of the platform.

So hey, here's a thing I don't think a lot of folks know: That whole "Patient Zero" thing? The French-Canadian airhost who supposedly spread HIV all over America? That's not real. That's not what happened or how it happened.

I was prepared for disaster, but the Netchoice decision is good. It rejects the broadest arguments made by the states and the platforms. It recognizes that platforms are ‘editors’ but dismisses the argument that regulation in this sphere is categorically unconstitutional.

There are a lot of foreboding signs about the state of the world. But I want to add two counter points. One, women’s basketball. Damn! Two, about 30 people (mostly straight friends and family members) asked my wife and me to save them a place along the parade route for Seattle Pride tomorrow.

I don’t love the headline - we absolutely can fight back for 2024! - but this is a good summary connecting the dots between Murthy v Missouri and the extended Congressional harassment campaign by the Weaponization committee targeting academics and election officials.

One of my colleagues read the schedule wrong and was in flight ot the conference during her scheduled time. She sent the slides to another professor in our department who did a darn good job of presenting. Guess the lesson there is, even in the worst case, things turn out alright.

If you're curious about the SCOTUS decision in Murthy v Missouri — and you should be if you care about social media, moderation, disinformation, censorship (or "censorship") — then you should read this article. TL;DR: The foundations of the case were bullshit. www.techdirt.com/2024/06/26/s...

Today's ruling in Murthy v. Missouri is good news for independent researchers and the American public. The case was thrown out on standing grounds, with the court acknowledging the facts presented were "murky" at best and at other times "clearly erroneous."

Better for some, but not better for our team who has consistently argued that the facts of this case just don’t support the allegations. (Plus we’re facing the same plaintiffs in the same court, with a 5th circuit appeal hearing on standing in a few weeks.)

As a person being sued by the same defendants in that same district court, “good” doesn’t come close. Hopeful that one gets thrown out on standing next week. I can’t imagine what kind of case they think they have now. The “facts” in both cases are the same.

6 months ago, I dragged my ass 8 wks post-partum to NYC to debate one of this cases's plaintiffs & so-called "censorship victim" in what I thought would be a good faith debate only to get dogpiled by crazy right-wing conspiracy theorists when I insisted THERE WAS NO STANDING So:

My sense is that the decision gets to the factual inaccuracy of the accusations (of censorship), in that the plaintiffs could not prove that they had been impacted by government coercion. Because the accusations themselves were conspiracy theories, fantasies, and vibes.

Murthy v. Missouri decision: SCOTUS rejects arguments that government illegally "censored" protected speech, ruling that plaintiffs lack standing. Very good day for social media moderation and for researchers caught in the crosshairs of a ludicrous accusation. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

We don’t have a current job opening, but we will likely have a tech support position (data engineer) and a policy translation position open in the coming weeks. The latter requires work in DC and WA, but I don’t know how that’s distribute and if the person can be otherwise remote.

Question for wiser folks than me: is the similarity between celebrity “stars” and ancient god “stars” intentional? Or was the term “star” given to celebrities due to “everyone is watching them” and a bit of the “shooting star” dynamic?

We explain how a flawed research paper has repeatedly catalyzed a misleading rumor about non-citizen voting. This rumor resurfaced in 2024 on a website dedicated to "facts" & spread widely on social media.

I knew pretty quick that I'd been hit by a bird, b/c the whirring sound prior & initial contact (on my head) reminded me of being dive-bombed by arctic terns in Iceland. But I was legitimatly surprised when I saw the UW dive-bombing bird was a seagull and not a crow. I was fully expecting a crow.

No. It’s currently pretty cool in Seattle. But what has happened is all the students went home last week, so the birds likely aren’t getting anywhere near as many food scraps as they have been. Hungry birds. Fewer targets. Hence, professors having to fight seagulls for their sandwiches.
