I really cannot emphasize how catastrophically bad the Court's ruling was. I do my best not to exaggerate about these kinds of things but I am still kind of in shock

Going public with an experience like this is life-altering for a woman, so when you read these stories remember both the extraordinary amount of courage involved and also the likelihood that there are many others you’ll never hear.

Coinbase's "Stand With Crypto" PAC website is now confirming what I reported earlier. More than 99% of the amount they claimed was raised by this supposedly "grassroots" PAC is in fact massive corporate contributions to the FairShake super PAC.

Read any history of Russia in the 1990s for a great guide to what happens when you hollow out the so-called "administrative state": graft, corruption, and ineptitude at providing even the most basic government services and providing for minimal public safety.

It's crazy to me that the agency we task with protecting our elections from hackers (while being SUPER careful to not be perceived as overstepping their boundaries) also does active shooter drills for small town public schools.

This is the key bit w/r/t what somebody was saying earlier about "why were we told the internet is forever". It is forever! It's also constantly evaporating. It's just that you don't get to pick which of those two it will be.

FBI briefings about foreign online influence campaigns are BACK. Julian Assange is BACK. Total uncertainty of which social media companies will do what to combat election mis/disinformation is BACK.

I maintain Risk is the definitive way to understand Assange. Poitras expertly tracked his descent and showed him explicitly making the bad judgement call of trying to secure his freedom by going all in on Trump to beat Clinton.

Biden let Assange loose five months before the election to keep him quiet is definitely a take!

Assange's vision of radical transparency has long involved prostrating himself before right-wing authoritarians, from Putin's Russia to Trump. But Trump's DOJ indicated him and Trump refused to pardon, then Biden's DOJ struck this deal. Curious how/if Assange and his supporters try to square this.

Unusual and intriguing: FTC recommends charges against Tiktok and Bytedance for violating privacy of US children under 13.

Few specifics but "The investigation uncovered reason to believe named defendants are violating or are about to violate the law."

I learned so much in the reporting of this story, but the piece I can't stop thinking about is how older adults "don't sense heat in the same way," according to UOttawa's Glen Kenny.

In other words, the elderly can't easily self-identify harmful heat.

new from me: Trump won't have access to the same levers of power he did after the 2020 election. I look at how in the absence of that internal pressure campaign, his allies are laying the groundwork to discredit and/or undermine an Election Day loss

Great reporting from @sheeraf.bsky.social. These campaigns are common, but details rarely so thoroughly confirmed from start to finish. Noteworthy: still very little proof they're effective, and they thrive especially on Twitter, which cut staff that would remove it.

Germany's counterpart to the FBI has released dossiers on eight alleged cybercriminals who have proven elusive to arrest so far. Unsurprisingly, all eight are Russian and do not photograph well (or at least these webcam shots are very unflattering).

And even go beyond that, drilling down on basics of human knowledge. Hire librarians, cite encyclopedias. Because now you can no longer, for instance, Google for things like what drill bit sizes match what screws. You get 10 different AI sites each making up their own numbers.

One would *think* that any search company pivoting to AI would learn that tech that mimics language without understanding is inherently riddled with falsehoods. So searches should prioritize sites that employ humans to get things correct, like...the news.

Talked about this a few months ago with a friend who'd recently lost his father. He said grieving was extremely hard but also necessary. Keeping his father's death in limbo seemed obscene and psychologically destructive. You need closure.
