New story from @wiswell.bsky.social on @reactorsff.bsky.social , full of sharks and self-care (the real kind, not the candles-and-bubble bath kind). May be the fiction hug you need just now: reactormag.com/ill-miss-mys...

And shelling peas, I forgot the shelling peas. I should pass them up if there are still any offered next week, the pint I bought of them contained less than a usable serving once shelled.

Another favorite vendor suggested that I needed to make a friend so they would share their umbrella with me It was a lot of rain very suddenly, and I'd left the house an hour and a half later for other errands, so everyone else had brought a raincoat or an umbrella, and I...had not.

One of my favorite elderly farmers shouted out to me, "You a water girl! She love the rain! She love it!" which is true, and also much kinder than, "Oh look, a drowned rat." (Also bluesky has been eating my posts I guess?)

Farmer's market haul: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cucumbers, orange cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, asparagus, olive bagels, blueberry bagels... ...and a thorough soaking, because the skies absolutely opened up just as I was parking.

Yyyyep. There's a reason old ladies used to be infamous for blue-rinsing their hair. They wanted a different shade of white. Now, of course, blue-haired little old ladies means something different. Still my friends in both cases! But different friends.

Yeah, I think the color of people's grays/whites is as individual as their previous hair color

One of the discussion points with Godchild will be the different winters at the schools they're considering! They're a winter kid, and they're considering schools as far south as Ames and as far north as Michigan Tech.

We're science fiction writers. Of course we write stories about the consequences of technological innovations, and no one ever comprehends the story is about the consequences and not the technology

Taking Younger Godkid down to tour Iowa State tomorrow, and when I check the weather I type "ames ia." I fear this is raising hopes of more similarity to Miskatonic than ia ia cthulhu fhtagn--um, I mean ISU--will be able to deliver.

The whole way up the Gulf of Bothnia, everywhere we stopped, we said to each other, "No, I was wrong before, THIS is Finnish Duluth." It just kept getting more like the Lake Superior North Shore. (I love the Lake Superior North Shore. So this was great.)

Our Dakota County Libraries here in Minnesota have a lot of this stuff as well. Tools of all sorts, museum passes you can check out for free, recording studio spaces... Helsinki's is grand, and I'm glad for them, but it's not an impossible dream to have in the US too.

Never go to the Rosemount Farmer's Market. Usually the punctuation of "farmer's market" is idiosyncratic, but in this case I think there really was only one farmer, and not a prolific one.

And for any writers who are beating themselves up about not having anything coherent to say about the pandemic: the tornado hit my college in '98. And it's only been in the last few years that I've really been able to dig into it. Art comes when it comes.

Salt licorice. My people, who hurt you. I mean, the Russians, and the Germans repeatedly, and each other, a whole heck of a lot of each other. But enough to produce this salt licorice obsession? They put it in chocolate. It's not okay.

Today I wrote a new story I didn't intend to write. I've had the opening line to it since before we moved home in 2003, but today was the first day when I had the actual story. Brains, who even knows.
