If we're taking about court-packing again, here's my favorite detail from the 1937 controversy: The SCOTUS justices, learning of FDR's scheme at the same time as everybody else, were handed copies *during oral arguments*. Imagine being the lawyer arguing in front of those preoccupied justices!

Telling children they are living in a dying world is an essential evil we don’t really have terminology for. Children cannot fix your sins through shame and abortion of hope. You are the villain in their story, not their savior - peddling nothing actualizing change, only dred.

This headline is dishonest. After being punched in the face by a cop for trying to comfort her father as their family's house burned down, she was also charged with a felony.

Nobody is going to earn your vote, folks. You get a voice by having it rewarded, but "support in advance" isn't how the political transaction works in an FTP democracy. Our system reduces to power. I don't like it. It's reality. You won't get further left with the right winning elections.

The only way to take the party left, BTW, because I know whose saying shit like this, is to retain power, take more, and obtain a greater voice for that wing of the coalition in a government they helped create. There's no universe where a loss takes this party anywhere but to the right.

So I mean this is funny but also it's about the importance of the database in machine learning and how algorithms are very good at finding stuff in data you had no idea was there. ML algorithms just do "oh, correlation, let's use that instead of causation" all the time.

Sexual predation is clearly not limited to the arts, and so-called "whisper networks" exist in every profession. And ultimately these networks always, always fail. They don't reach the most vulnerable and they don't ever remove the offender or prevent future harm.

This is also why it's so important to live your life not online all the time. There's a certain amount of performance to personality in online social spaces where one may feel compelled to love or loathe or opine or Take Positions because that's how one Engages a platform. But what if you...didn't?

YOKE OF STARS (aka my fish communism novella) is releasing on July 16, 2024.

I've been off social media because of the state of my health.

If you feel like spreading the word about the book, I'd much appreciate it.

the fact that Trump is able to run at all either means two bad things, 1. Our legal, political, and media systems have all comprehensively failed us, or 2. People really do like him because more people are wicked shitbags than we thought
