I wrote a review of Frank Foer's book for the spring issue of Dissent where I said Biden should have retired a champ. I stand by it.

Very excited to be talking with my old friend Michelle Wu about The Hollow Parties—surely the only book ever to quote Boston’s Martin Lomasney, “the Mahatma of Ward 8,” in the methods appendix—on June 11, 6PM, at Beacon Hill Books: www.eventbrite.com/e/the-hollow...

The psychodramas of Erastus Corning and Dan O'Connell! Boss Crump! "Vote often and early for James Michael Curley!" And now that line about the aged Curley, seeing an unfamiliar sign. "Who is this fellow, Pizza?" When told, he replied "I figured we might get a contribution out of him."

The horse is out of the barn on this one, but the lasting value of the realignment perspective comes in its analysis not just of demographic loyalties but the changing sources of political conflict.

No, Nate Cohn, a realignment is not “a lasting shift in the partisan allegiance of the country, or at least a large demographic group.” Following Sundquist, it is a new axis of cleavage dividing the parties. Cf. www.nytimes.com/2024/03/23/u...

That critique in Consequences of Party Reform flows directly from the less political science-y efforts of Commission for a Democratic Majority. And as a Berkeley PhD from the era told us, "Nelson was a warrior, at war with the New Left." Anyway, curious for your take on that and more in the book.

Hard to make case that 1952 and 1968, amid unpopular wars, were parallel cases. lt's back to the 19th century story where other party leaders may wish they had a stronger head of the ticket but can no longer maneuver to make it happen. And what intervened was presidentialism, not just party reform.

I visited the Reagan Library for research in 2018. Such a contrast between what those us in the research room saw, writing about, e.g., Reagan and open housing, Reagan and the Right, and the awe-struck tourists staring at Nancy's dresses and that 707.

Many comparisons, rightly to the UAW in its heyday, but the strike also resonates with the Gilded Age. American workers have long been militant on the jobsite and conservative in politics. And Fain's almost mystic vision of labor can sound more like the Knights than the CIO.
