The psychodramas of Erastus Corning and Dan O'Connell! Boss Crump! "Vote often and early for James Michael Curley!" And now that line about the aged Curley, seeing an unfamiliar sign. "Who is this fellow, Pizza?" When told, he replied "I figured we might get a contribution out of him."

The horse is out of the barn on this one, but the lasting value of the realignment perspective comes in its analysis not just of demographic loyalties but the changing sources of political conflict.

No, Nate Cohn, a realignment is not “a lasting shift in the partisan allegiance of the country, or at least a large demographic group.” Following Sundquist, it is a new axis of cleavage dividing the parties. Cf. www.nytimes.com/2024/03/23/u...

That critique in Consequences of Party Reform flows directly from the less political science-y efforts of Commission for a Democratic Majority. And as a Berkeley PhD from the era told us, "Nelson was a warrior, at war with the New Left." Anyway, curious for your take on that and more in the book.

@samrosenfeld.bsky.social and I also have a hunch, which we talk a little about in our book (press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...) that Nelson Polsby's hawkish views on Vietnam colored his negative views on McGovern-Fraser in ways that have cast a long shadow in political science.

Hard to make case that 1952 and 1968, amid unpopular wars, were parallel cases. lt's back to the 19th century story where other party leaders may wish they had a stronger head of the ticket but can no longer maneuver to make it happen. And what intervened was presidentialism, not just party reform.

Agree with @profhansnoel.bsky.social on the virtues of conventions, but disagree on the role of post-1968 McGovern-Fraser reforms. Ever since rise of national committees in late 19th century, party bigwigs haven't been able to ease out incumbent presidents. www.nytimes.com/2023/12/05/o...

Many comparisons, rightly to the UAW in its heyday, but the strike also resonates with the Gilded Age. American workers have long been militant on the jobsite and conservative in politics. And Fain's almost mystic vision of labor can sound more like the Knights than the CIO.
