Between last night's debate and today's Supreme Court decisions, we are heading into an unfathomably dark place at breathless speed.

It's definitely not on the level of PIG, which is fantastic, but it's also not your typical studio hack job.

Learned a lot from this @aduralde.bsky.social interview with @kphipps3000.bsky.social that we just posted on The Reveal today. Alonso talks about his new book on the history of LGBTQ+ representation in film and it's quite a journey: thereveal.substack.com/p/interview-...

Yeah, see I think it’s the most detailed and evocative world I’ve witnessed in any movie this year, and feels so utterly specific in its rhythms and sense of character/place that I’m searching for comparisons. Maybe Moodysson’s TOGETHER in theme, but very much its own thing.

I strongly disagree but a word like “correctly” rankles a bit. She’s making strong choices in the framing, as she does in every other aspect of this (amazing) film. I didn’t long for the film to be more conventional in any respect.

What is “correct” supposed to mean? Like you think she’s actually incompetent and not deliberate in her framing?

This is why, when I got “canceled” for a tweet, I refused to affirm that “cancel culture” is a thing because the made-up moral panic around it was always obviously a stalking horse for straight-up right-wing state-sponsored censorship of the left. Dipshits who got played still won’t admit it.

American cinema would be so much better if we talked about "world-building" in reference to the immense detail invested films like JANET PLANET rather than some gargantuan sci-fi piece of crap.

Do I? The "stream it" stuff is in reference to platforms where you pay a monthly fee, "rent it" is in reference to straight rental platforms obv. Did I get something wrong?

For @nytimes.com, I put together a list of 15 Donald Sutherland movies you can stream. I could have done 15 more. What a career! www.nytimes.com/2024/06/21/m...
