How many are we talking? I’ve written articles that code several thousand news articles and simply treat them as “data” and only cite the ones that I quote directly. In one, I include an appendix list of all sources (not articles).

NYPD dep. commish says he “found a book on terrorism” at Columbia. From the Oxford UP website, the book answers the questions, “What is terrorism? Is it war? Is democracy especially vulnerable to terrorist attacks? What can we do to stop it?” This is how you seed a genocide-justifying moral panic.

OK, this was funny in a "might as well laugh because the alternative is to cry" sort of way.

this is the logical endpoint of suburbanite cop ideology that says all cities are crime ridden hellholes - a complete destruction of public space and civic life replaced by television-centric suburban sprawl where the only places that exist are homes, offices and shopping.

Anyway the right-left alliances are always first and foremost male supremacist alliances. Reactionaries think that they can convert men from the left with promises to restore their supremacy in the private sphere. They’re often right.

I think it also comes up in his discussion of reflexivity, but I’m a few years out of Bourdieu-ology so I don’t have any specific references at the moment.

Ok so by problem, you mean as an epistemological problem for the analyst? I get the question better now. I am not sure it’s satisfactory but I think this is at the core of his defense of the autonomy of science/academia.

The Trader Joe’s website does have a feedback form. While it’s designed for praise or gripes about one’s local store, you can easily use it to say the local store is fine, but the corporate effort to torpedo 90 years of labor law is not. The more headache this causes them, the better.

Every academic has disagreements—often strong ones—with some peers, and opinions—even dismissive ones—about some people’s work. But the idea that it’s a smart move to side with the likes of the Florida BoG against your enemies is a prime case of feeding the crocodile in the hope it eats you last.

Everything good that happened in my writing career happened because someone, normally another writer, helped me. Suggested me for something, put in a good word, and so on. The idea was always that you help others and they help others in their turn. It's not a win or lose game.

People don’t just live in the present but in relation to the future. Young folks in 2019 might have imagined buying a house in the near term. Skyrocketing values during covid and interest rate hikes have crushed those dreams.

Amid the war in Gaza, Democrats and Republicans are equally concerned about the possibility of rising violence against Jewish people in the US. But Democrats are much more likely than Republicans to be concerned about the possibility of rising violence against US Muslims.
