Yes, most people are making the latter argument. It could be. I almost hope somebody is making backroom deals with the palace. They should get something for all this.

The smart thing would have been to run separate candidates in the presidential election (use the runoff!) and unity candidates in the municipal elections.

“To me, or more accurately, to the politics I was channeling, this wasn’t a humanitarian crisis, or racism, nor even a nation on its knees. It was a civilizational crisis. That meant that it wasn’t just about the Palestinians, but ‘our’ collective defeat as the Muslim world.”

yeah, I just don't see how it could add up any other way. Memleket is now joining some races too. All that is bound to suck up some energy from CHP candidates.

We just finished our first week of post-earthquake Zoom writing sessions in 2024, our 43rd week overall. I’m excited to see Turkey and Syria scholars of many levels joining from both sides of the Atlantic to get writing done. If you are interested or know of students who may be, please reach out!

What he’s signing are (I think) 155mm artillery shells, indiscriminate weapons that the Biden admin has rushed to the IDF in violation of its own arms transfer policy.

I'm pretty sure that particular train left the station, and subsequently, crashed, burned, and slid into the depths of the ocean in 2004. I don't see how it is getting resurrected now.

I might have to pick your brain on this at some point. Looking for a dog that would enjoy daily runs with me.

I know they are *literally* trying to sell the book but I am still thrilled with Waterstones’ description of #ToTheCity. Out in the UK on February 15th!

Some glum but reasonable predictions: "Turkey’s new regime cannot remain a treaty ally of the United States for very long, and it can’t be an accession country to the EU."

My 9yo’s epic get well comic cheering on my immune system for its fight with covid! First time we’ve had it - I wasn’t patient 0 in the house, but first positive & worst symptoms so far. The cleverness of the comic definitely helps :) Stay safe all.

One day this kind of thing will all explode and people will gawp and say they weren’t warned. No-one has yet explained to me why activities by groups like this are even legal. www.theguardian.com/world/2023/d...

Every December for 5 years now I have made a massive end-of-the-year playlist and accompanying Twitter thread of the best songs to come out of Turkey. I think it's important to highlight the incredible creativity coming out of the country.

Thoughtful insights from a stay in Palestine in Selim's younger years. On how Muslims vs. non-Muslim Westerners perceive the Occupation, civilizational confrontation (and defeat) vs. violation of international law.

Been thinking a lot lately about how people want Russians to be different than they are. There's plenty of data to suggest that most Russians aren't afraid to give their opinions to pollsters because they *support* the war. Some portion are unhappy b/c not enough Ukrainians are being killed.

Today is Teachers' Day in Turkey, and it's a good day to read this post and to watch this film. Also, if you plan to send flowers to a teacher in Turkey, as per tradition, try to send them cauliflowers, this year. It might help better. Öğretmenler günü kutlu olsun!
