People who say "it sounds better on vinyl" are mostly making it up; modern vinyl is still pressed from a digital master, so there is no difference.
Old records were pressed from analog tape and did sound nicer though!
Even if it did sound better on vinyl, I wouldn't know. Whenever I put out a song I pay a guy to sit there and make changes and tell me what sounds better because my ears aren't sophisticated enough. And I've got a pretty sharp ear.
I have vinyl for the aesthetic. So does everyone else.
I'm curious, I know we've gone in hard on mp3 as the mainstream digital format because of size, but do you have thoughts as to better formats for sound in digital?
I have a fb friend who is a serious audiophile - he literally rebuilds old sound equipment - and I believe him about real vinyl having a wider range. And I doubt he even listens to most "modern vinyl." Of course the sound is not there in the first place, as you observe. But that's not the point.
That’s disappointing. I’ve always been fascinated that, at least as far as it’s been explained to me, vinyl is a lossless format, and can store far more data than a CD ever could.
I mostly agree, but I also think some people prefer some of the sonic shortcomings of vinyl. Sometimes out of nostalgia (it sounds more like their memories of youth), or because the lower fidelity sounds softer to their ears. Mono bass can sound thicker in some rooms too.
Goddammit
Not that I'm likely to ever have the budget to rebuild a vinyl collection anyway, but if I do it's going to be an absolute bitch finding everything I want in vintage
