Lisa Kennedy also illustrated another gorgeous picture book, Welcome to Country by Aunty Joy Murphy. Kennedy’s art style is vivid, warm, rich with sensory detail, and infused with a sense of history and wonder. I recommend checking out her other works. 2/2

Recently read Respect by Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson, illustrated by Lisa Kennedy. I love Kennedy’s artwork, and this book is stunning. A poetic invitation to respect culture, Country, community and nature, and to listen to First Nations’ stories. Highly recommended. 1/2

Galvanising interview with Aunty Dulcie Flower AM, winner of this year’s NAIDOC Lifetime Achievement Award. She talks about fighting racial injustice through healthcare, patient advocacy, and supporting First Nations nurses. Her myriad achievements are a lesson in practical advocacy.

I only came across this recently, but it’s a great interview with Kamilaroi man Corey Tutt and Balanggarra and Yolngu woman Molly Hunt, author and illustrator of This Book Thinks Ya Deadly! It’s a celebration of Blak excellence and tells the stories of 80 First Nations People.

Interesting interview with Tony Ganzer, author of Kneading Journalism: Essays on baking bread and breaking down the news. I particularly like the idea of monthly meet-ups at a bar where locals and journalists can talk about complicated issues and concerns. Intrigued by the term “journalism cosplay”.

I think some Mastodon instances have curated Trending topics, which lets moderators stop pile-ons, misinformation and bots from being amplified. It'd be good to have a mix of what's trending in pop culture, sport, news, science, community etc.

For Disability Pride Month I’m once again begging for more artists to start considering accessibility and add alt text to your images. It helps low/no vision folks, neurodivergent folks, and more. Plus alt text shows up in searches! There’s a toggle in settings so you won’t forget. 👇

"Any description no matter how delivered is better than none."

This post by @oedipusnj.bsky.social is reassuring. I've seen people being told off for not using alt text properly (too long, too short, etc). I confess I've been posting less art/photos because of alt-stress. 😬

In Australia, native bees are better pollinators than European honey bees, they’re also stingless and more kid-friendly, and less vulnerable to Varroa mites.

You can support native bees by growing more biodiverse native plants and using less pesticide.

Cool to see more kidlit people on Bluesky! I love the warmth and whimsy in this set of illustrations by @shellyswann.bsky.social.

(For alt text users, there are two kids with a spyglass; a girl with a giant teapot friend; a sweet alligator holding a flower; and a dapper bird in a bow tie.)

Started listening to Anomalous, a podcast by Australian comedian Em Rusciano. She talks about her experiences as someone with ADHD and autism, the barriers to diagnosis (especially for girls), and the fear of not being believed. Insightful, entertaining and moving.

I love seeing picture books with mixed media! I like digital art too, especially since it can be more accessible for artists who don't have space/resources for traditional art materials. But it makes me happy to see Slow Art and artists using oil paints, gouache, acrylic, collage, thread etc.

The Giga Goose joins the Demon Duck of Doom in the pantheon of huge, prehistoric birds. Described as being like a giant bush chook, it stood about 2m tall (6ft) and weighed approx 230kg (500lbs). It would have been amazing to see them roaming across Australia.

I'd definitely appreciate a custom "Care" reaction. But not a "Hug". Many people don't like to be hugged. I'd also like an "Oh no" reaction that could also work as "Wow" or "Surprise". And one that works as "Acknowledge/Interesting/Hmm", for news you've seen, but isn't necessarily happy.

Fact of the Day: On average, the human body emits about 100W of heat – similar to a household incandescent light bulb, back in the day.
