What if we put all the words on the Internet?
What if we figured out a way to find them?
What if we slowly changed that to only find ads?
What if we then made up facts instead of taking you to expertise?
What if you couldn't own anything and everything had a monthly fee?
Welcome to the 2020s.

I crawl out of my hidey-hole just to say:
This may be the greatest life-hack of the 21st century and I wish I'd thought of it on my own, but I shall use it hereafter!
$9.99 a month? Say hello to my little $10 mastercard!

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was creating "free trials" for critical software, predicated on providing credit-card info to hard-to-unsubscribe perpetual recurring monthly fee MAFIAS.

I'll continue to try and stay off social media and avoid the news, but every friggin browser wants to show me another page from the goddamned YELLOW KING.
I've never felt so angry at how corporate owned monomedia has taken over all our narratives.
This is like a cancer of the immune system.

I wish we had different candidates.
One spent his life in public service to democracy, but is old.
One has spent his life in self-service, hates democracy, supported insurrection, is a felon, and is also old.
These are not equal choices.
Media, one of these jockeys will burn the racetrack down.

@bghilton.bsky.social I try not to read your blog before we do our IRO episodes but I can't remember if I ever told you how much I admire your tenacity at getting through all that stuff!
I hope we make it too. The slowness has been due to life issues not the show, but we're moving again.
Thanks

We should unite and build reliable web content and share it via WEB-RINGS like it was 1999.
I realize it would be the digital equivalent of Colonial Williamsburg, but it would also be reliable high value content, easy to navigate w/o Search Engines.

Okay - I made it almost 24hrs before breaking my social media fast, but I need some #VintageComputing help.
These computers were at use at Cal State, Northridge in 1979.
I can't ID them and am very curious.
Case looks industrial but could hardened off-the-shelf units.

I like this place better than the other place but I don't feel any benefit to reading other folks anxious takes on this season's big season finale in November.
So I deleted my news apps. And I'm gonna go quiet here, but not deleting my account.
I'm turtling up, as @robindlaws.bsky.social terms it.

Hey, America - the hard fight for democracy can be so easily undone. Too many of us are lazily embracing the "let's ride the slide" mentality.
Personally, I think it's too late for this to get solved peacefully. The long night of American Fascism is upon us.
The SCOTUS just greased the skids.

I'm slowly developing a heuristic for whether or not to trust LLMs. I've found it pretty reliable and wanted to share it:
Did the answer come from an LLM?
Yes: You should fact-check the answer.
No: You should still fact-check the answer.
I hope you find this as helpful as I have.

My family is very, very Southern. Been here a long time. Which means they picked up on that classic gothic Southern trope: "Somewhere in our family history, there was a Cherokee princess..."
No.
Statistically there are gonna be more closeted queens in your family history than Cherokee princesses.

Wow! $4.50 in 1988 was A LOT of cash for a young HPL fan. I could eat a whole meal at Waffle House for $5 and sometimes even had enough spare cash on me to leave a dollar tip, plus petrol was only $0.85/gallon.
Not that I'm old enough to remember the 80s <cough><cough>.

Really been enjoying having the AC out during the hottest two weeks of 2024 so far.🤡
Today was 99F and they say it "felt like" 104.
It felt like the sun was trying to murder us.
Tried to take groceries home with 2 bags of ice in a cooler and everything still ended up floppy by the time we got home.

Inexplicably - a cabin appears in a run down mall parking lot in a nameless city.
Inside... a vast, primal forest.
THE WOODS IN A CABIN.
People go in to investigate - but don't come out.
What's going on in there?
Humanity sends in all our finest billionaires to find out.
Then burns the cabin.

Looks like the refurb/used market for that tier isn't really well stocked yet. I imagine as the M3's roll out, the trade-ins and sell-offs will improve inventory and lower prices.
For now I'm stuck with Vime's boots.

It's the re-watch show where we watch IN SEARCH OF and add the bits the producers chose not to present.
This week: SAN ANDREAS FAULT
with geologist Sharon Hill and archaeologist Jeb Card.

I mean if I assumed my editing time were worth merely $20/hr that would save me about $2000/yr in saved hours - but that's all imaginary.
Anyway, this render is taking 15 mins+ on a 1st gen Mac M1.
Not sure the choke point but gonna shut apps down so the audio software has more resources.

I spend most of the 8-10 mins it takes to render my podcast episodes thinking about how much time I'd save if I had a newer computer.
On average I estimate it would be about two hours a week across my projects.
I can easily mentally justify the spend - I just can't seem to produce the money.

I was today-years-old when I learned that the CHYRON text on tv screens is named after the company that dominated that business long ago.
Like Xerox and Band-Aid, the brand has become a term of ubiquitous eponomy.

You would never make a precious and life-saving machine with a huge self-destruct button would you?
Yet EVERY Democracy has one built in.
The formula is simple:
1 - Scare people
2 - Convince voters a "strong man" > a "strong society"
3 - Vote the wolf in and watch the sheep tear down the fences
